- Get rid of the double walls.
- Focus on upgrading camps/farming troops first and foremost.
- Stay at TH 8 for several months, until everything is maxxed.
I'm not speaking from firsthand experience, but if I were him,
I'd just start farming up until he maxes th8. It'll take a while but I'm sure it's doable. I'd start with troop upgrades, army camp upgrades, and splash damage upgrades. He should also improve/redesign his base.
I remember a situation like this back when I had to tell my mom I had an STD. I told her "my friend" has an itch and asked for advice.
Just get your troops to level 5 and hang 1100-1400 trophies and you'll be alright.
