Lots of good points have been said. To me hog-rush was a shortcut to win (almost sure-win) which does not require much skill. The only drawback was the high consumption of DE --- which is not too much of a concern for war or for people who gem.
I still use Hogs now for wars, but I need to put in more thoughts (e.g. to guess where are those giant bombs, which route can avoide the AQ/BK as much as possible, how much back-up force I need to clear the field with limited suviving hogs....etc)
Its more fun.
