I think it's good to have, but far from critical (I did them and practiced gowipe as a th8, but hogs were much more reliable wins in a cw setting -- I did have some gowipe 3-star wins against th9s in cw, though). As someone else said, it will also shorten your upgrade path to golems level 4 when you get to th9.
