For 2 000 gold just attack any guy! They all have at least 2 000 gold! I think the game is fine as it is and if upgrade time was shorter it wouldn't be fun because you would have a maxed out base in like 3 days
This is the way SC works: those unable to exercise some patience to build up resources end up buying gems, your impatience is their benefit.
That's why this is never going to work out.

i think that upgrades time-to-cost is very justified
if you plan your upgrades correctly, you can spend your gold on 2 to 4 upgrades and start collecting resources for the next 3 that you are targeting
at the time your upgrades are done, start the new planned upgrades
