Spend your gems on just straight boosting, you'll get way more out of it compared to gemming the resources and the time on your buildings.
He is using an anti-hog base. Anti-hog bases require a buffer layer of non-defensive buildings (ex. mines and barracks). The outer layer is composed of all of one's defenses that are not used in the center in order to make the hogs go around the base while taking constant fire from the center. Hope this helps :)Quote:

I'd get archer queen & b-king upto at least 15, then use gems to boost barracks & spell factory & heroes - you could farm a shed load of gold per hour. I'd farm in gold 1 or lower crystal first, but drop if needed.
with the boosting you could afford to use a spell & hero (but don't kill them!) per raid, and be constantly raiding.
