Just wondering which is preferred. I might have to go with the cannon even though I do like how the archer tower defends more tiles.

Archer towers, they got better range. And they contain some ladies on them.
Archer towers
They are better in general because at level 11, they do just as much damage as a level 11 cannon with more range
Archer tower hands down!
Here's onehttp://i.imgur.com/25hPQ6V.jpg
Archer tower, but don't ever neglect your cannons. :)
AT, longer range, attacks air units...
Your all wrong because the Draggons are obviously the best! level 3 dragons ooooh yeah baby..
Archer towers are obviously better but the better thing about cannons is they are much cheaper level 9 is only 800,000
Archer towers a probably better, but that is why cannons cost less gold and time to upgrade.
At level 11 both do 75 dps but the Archer tower has a longer range and can shoot air units so I choose the Archer tower
Blah, blah, revisionist history.
The question was whether cannons or arch towers were more effective, if one normalized so that they were both the same level. Well, that's the way I rephrased the question. (glare)
By the way, on a serious note, I don't see people really thinking of upgrades on a "marginal benefit" comparison. Is 7.5 mill elix for L6 arch really multiples more effective than the 2.25 mill for L5 arch, and so forth... the curve flattens so much for each specific upgrade within one specific building, or troop type, for each subsequent upgrade.
Then, to compare each relative ROI/ marginal benefit curve to another comparative building or troop is an intriguing way of thinking of it.

Shew, talk about reframing the arguement when you are losing! ;)
I readily agree that an archer tower is better than a cannon when at the same level. Once again, though, that wasn't what we were debating.
In retrospect that was poorly phrased on my part. I didn't mean to refer to the cost/benefit comparison of them at each level, but that was on me for wording it wrong. A better way to say that might have been benefit comparison (I may have just made up a term, but it works). I want to compare the benefits from upgrading each of them and see which does more.
What I mean is, what benefits do you get from going from archer tower level to archer tower level 8? The main benefits are:
- One hit kill against level 6 archers.
- 1 hit kill against level 4 goblins.
- 2 hit kill against level 5 barbs.
Now for the main benefits of the level 9 cannon as opposed to level 8:
- 2 hit kill level 4 barbs.
- ONE HIT KILL LEVEL 5 ARCHERS
- 1 hit kill level 4 goblins.
- 1 hit kill level 5 wallbreakers.
When I look at that list, the question that I ask (and I think everyone should) is, which benefits me more? Looking at that list, I would rather have one more weapon one shot level 5 archers and wallbreakers (both 1 shot level 4 gobs) than something that one shots level 6 archers (because few people at those levels will even encounter them) and 2 shot killing level 5 barbs.
From my perspective, the choice between the two is clear: the cannon provides a greater benefit. The more weapons that can one shot wallbreakers and archers, the better.
I have to say from level 8-10 I prefer cannons because for almost half the cost you can upgrade your cannons
ie; 8-9 cannon costs 800000 but 8-9 archer costs 15000000
