One thing I haven't seen mentioned is prioritizing offense. Always make sure you upgrade your army camps, laboratory, spell factory, and heroes. Offense is your main source of income, don't neglect.

Do whatever you feel you want to do. i myself wake up one day and think ill upgrade that, then ill do that then that and end up doing completely different things instead. Typically do your most used troop upgrades first, upgrade your weakest defences in terms of balance so your well rounded. as for not upgrading more than 1 type of the same defence at once i disagree. Short term pain for long term gain should be your mantra. why trickle upgrades when you can have them all significantly stronger at similar times strengthening your base quicker. Simply put your town hall in a corner and let snipers give you a free shield.
Splash is always the best thing to upgrade first, and if you find that you always have no builders with full storages just leave a builder free and do walls while things upgrade
For offense, upgrading your troops, barracks and army camps.
For defense, upgrade the splash damage and walls.
