Using dragons in clan wars successfully ...

Hi, all,

in our last clan war I was ranked number 4 in our clan. I'm currently at TH 7. I had just upgraded my dragons to level 2 and all barracks to level 9 so I could produce them reasonably fast without wasting gems.

So I pondered how to use them in the war. Turned out that their two top players both had negligently exposed air defenses. Both TH 8 and at a first glance impressive bases, but exposed air defenses, no doubt. Makes you go "hmmm ...".

Short version: 6 stars and most heroic attack. My personal resume: dragons really rock, if used intelligently.

Long version:

For the first opponent, who had one air defense out in the open, I chose the barbarian king to get rid of that one and used 3 lightning spells to eliminate his most central one. The remaining air defense was taken down by the dragons. Why one would ever leave his town hall outside in clan wars, fails me.

Second opponent: air defenses tucked in a bit but not enough. I chose to go with 16 hog riders, three healing spells and 6 own and one CC dragon. I used groups of 5/6 hog riders supported by a healing spell to eliminate all of the air defenses this time. The dragons did the rest.
If you watch carefully, you will notice that I even spoil my second healing spell - sort of. I intended to deploy hog riders but had not switched back from the spells in my troops panel. Seems like I'm bound to make that mistake over and over again - happens in regular raiding, too. Tough sh*t. ;) Same result - 3 stars.

Yes, these two attacks were expensive. In clan wars I really don't care about the loot. It's about winning. Period. And in the end I was at least compensated for the dark elixir - gaining 700 while spending 640. Elixir is another story, because besides my own attacks I was busy stuffing clan castles of my trusty clan members. Our top player with level 5 troops was not available, unfortunately. So it was mostly me with level 4. Well, we won ;)

Well, the bases are way bigger than mine and definitely impressed me at first sight. Then I noticed that they were wide open to air troops. That's why I attacked their #2 first, and only after that went ridiculously easy, decided to try #1 - the one with the hogs.

Before I had dragons available I as most people in our clan (TH 7 and less) used wizards and healers with some success, mostly. I don't think I could have taken down any of these two bases completely with wizards. The bathrobe guys tend to wander around in different directions instead of staying closely together, so there's always one group that will lose it's supporting healer and therefore die pretty quickly.

Time will tell what I can conquer with dragons ;)

P.S. Yes, some people definitely rush their town halls too quickly.

Or you could hog and wizard.

I have 3 stared a max town hall 8 base with dragons back when I was town hall 7. I just used two groups and raged them and they were able to take the outside layer as well as the air defense. When they got to the townhall they had met up, I dropped a heal spell and then they just easily destroyed the rest of the buildings with the help of my barbs king, and some archers/Wizards in my clan castle.

To OP: Didn't see the video, but from what I read, you learned the power of the dragon! If it wasn't so expensive I'd use it every clan war, but I need purple goo for new troop upgrades.

At Th7 & 8 dragons are power houses. The 4th air defense and extra seeking air mines at Th9 and 10 make them far less effective there. There still solid but 3 staring is a long shot due to difficulty in knocking out all 4 air defense before they do significant damage to your army.


From what I have seen is debatable if spamming rage or using 3 lightnings + rage is more effective. In Clan Wars you can always analyze the base beforehand so I'd say - if you need to knock out a high priority centralized AD, lightening. If you need to quickly take out several peripheral AD, Rage


Thoughts -

All my air troops are maxed. I've done a few raids. I know a pair of dragons in a loonion army is pretty good but it seems if I bring more I am better off going mass dragon than mixing the 3 troop types. Mostly because if I miscalculate the initial balloon assault (I use these to quickly knock out air defenses) its a huge problem.

I still think 20-40 minions along for the ride is better than 100% dragons. Just save them for when the wizard towers are knocked out and Rage 20+ of them at a critical point, using the remainder in groups of 5 to quickly take out key defenses.

new clan war, new opponents, ...

I'm pondering to attack a not-so-much upgraded TH 10 (their #1) or TH 9 (their #2). If I go for mass dragons, would you recommend healing or rage spells to support them? Both opponents have 4 air defenses that are centralized too much to "surgically remove" them before deploying the dragons, yet they are of fairly low levels (4 and below).

If you want to help your clan win, you should let the higher ups in your clan attack those two and work on 3 starring the strongest base you know for sure you can get.

The two higher ups both rushed their town hall and in the past I did manage to achieve better results then them. Trust me on this. I almost maxed my offensive capability. Only hogs to level 2 and rage spell to level 4 are still waiting for their upgrade. Army camps, barracks, all up to maximum capacity.

The first video in my first post - our highest ranked player with TH 10 got 2 stars. I got 3 as you can see. I did this attack late, when it was obvious that a 1 star improvement was desireable because all the easier opponents had already been successfully attacked.

Besides, I'm the clan leader :cool:
