On May 10th I finally decided to make a commitment to my neglected Heroes. We sat down and had a long talk and both my AQ and BK decided that they would feel much better about themselves if they were lvl 40 vs. their current lvl 10.
So, I recruited two builders, Archie and Bing, who agreed to work full time until they were upgraded and the journey began.
I've been going at it for a couple weeks now and I know there are a lot of you out there who want to work on your heroes as well, so I thought I'd throw an invite out and see if anyone cares to join me on this journey.
I love seeing how others are doing things and progressing in this game we love.
Brandon's thread detailing his quest to lvl 40's is most certainly my inspiration, but I may tweak a few things as the journey progresses. I'm in the easy part now because the DE/day requirements are fairly low, but as it gets harder I may change some things up. I'm not going to try and replicate a guide because Brandon did an awesome job there. I'm not using the exact same army comp, but I'd strongly recommend reading his guide if you haven't.
I did make up a simple spreadsheet that details the days for each upgrade, total DE cost, DE from drills, etc. and broke it down to identify how much DE per day I have to farm in order to stay ahead of the builders.
I currently have two lvl 6 drills and the third one will be online in about 15 days, so that's why the DE from Drills jumps up on my spreadsheet at lvl 15

Current Farming strategy:
I'm currently TH10 with 240 camp spaces and lvl 6 BARCH troops. I have lvl 5 lightning spell, but will be upgrading it to lvl 6 shortly.
I'm doing 3 barracks full time archers, 1 barracks full time barb, and adding 4 WB's on one of the arch barracks when needed.
So army works out to be approximately 163 archers, 69 barb, and 4 WB's for each attack.
I have lightning spells cooking full time in the lab for zapping.
Farming between 1900-2100 trophy's but holding the Crystal III badge for the extra 50 DE win bonus.
Primary targets are bases with 1k+ DE on the edge or one layer deep. If the base is really weak I'll go two layers deep.
Attack is fairly straight forward BARCH with focus on getting the 50% and then overloading the rest of the troops by the DE storage and use WB's as needed to get deeper.
The hard part is that I have shifted my thinking to DE only, so if a base has 1k of DE and only 20k/20k gold and elixir I still hit it. I do still hit the gimmie collector bases for gold/elixir, but if I spend all my time looking for good gold bases with good DE it will take that much longer.
Boosting and playtime
I plan to boost my 4 barracks and spell factory once a day and throughout the day on random work breaks and whatnot I'll probably get another 10-15 raids in.
So, overall this is how much I play already so no real change there.
Zapping
During this boost time I'll get 4 sets of 5 spells (assuming I start the session with 5 spells). As I'm nexting through when I have 5 spells I look for a base with a capped DE storage, or check revenges available and hit them for a quick 2k zap. If there's a full lvl 6 drill deep in a base, I'll double zap it for a quick 1k.
During non boost time when spells are ready I'll search for a willing DE donor to give me his DE. :)
Goals:
- Keep 3 builders going full time on my normal defensive upgrades (piece of cake)
- Keep lab going full time
- Stay ahead of DE per day on spreadsheet throughout entire journey. Zero rest time for Hero builders.
Challenges:
- Cost: Boosting four barracks and the spell factory once a day and likely twice a day on Sat/Sun I estimate it will cost approximately $20/mo. in gems. (I bought a $100 gem pack to save some $)
- Time Commitment: For now, I'm staying way ahead of my DE per day requirement with my normal playing time. Towards the end, I will likely have to increase my play time some but we'll see.
- Clan Wars: This is a royal pain to be honest. For starters, I will have zero heroes for the next 6 months for attacks so I am having to change my whole strategy. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to do 12 mass Dragons with rage/heal because they dispatch CC troops very easily.
The other issue is the cost of donations. I'm one of our higher players and typically end up donating about 5k DE worth of Hogs/Witches to clanmates. Fortunately we only do 2 wars per week as a clan, but it does add up. It also takes away a solid four hours of farming per week as well which hits the bottom line as well.

Defending my DE
I've experimented with several different base designs over the past months and have come up with this one. It's not perfect by any means, but in the 1900-2100 range I get a free shield in 9 out of 10 attacks and I've only had one get to my DE storage in the last two or three months. So, basically zappers are the only ones I get hit by and due to the speed of the free shield I've only had it happen once in the past two weeks.
So, I'm not really taking into account any losses because I feel it will be very minimal overall.

I'll try to keep my progress updated here and I encourage anyone else who is farming their heroes to chime in with your strategy and successes.
If I keep everyone rocking full time I'm estimating an early December completion date for both heroes.
