Question on 4 cupper bases

I have been in Champion league for a few months.
I ever wonder why, when I raid & 2 starred the 4 cupper bases, I get 2 cups and sometimes 3 cups in return. Anyone can enlighten me on this?

If you got 3 it was worth 5.

1 gives 1,1,1
2 gives 1,1,2
3 gives 1,2,3
4 gives 1,2,4
5 gives 1,3,5

One reason i can think of is that althought cups are displayed as a round number, it might not be the actual case.

For example, you see 4 cups, but it is actually 4.4 cups, 4.4 divided by 3 and multiplied by two is 2.9 cups, which rounds up to 3 cups.

But if u see 4 cups and it's actually 3.6 cups, 3.6 divide by 3 multiplied by 2 is 2.4 cups, which rounds down to 2 cups.

I could be wrong tho, just a guess.
