I think it would work though. Players want gems and maxing Collectors for an achievement is fairly straight forward. I don't think SC would implement anything that prevented players from upgrading their town halls no matter how good an idea it might be (i.e. preventing premmies).
It would definitely work for the casual players who become premmies, but it would do nothing for the hardcore players. As many in this thread have already stated, it is almost a sin to sacrifice precious builder times to waste on collectors. Any player who is dedicated to farming walls will not look twice at these rewards.
Let people play how they wanna play, an arbitrary collector requirement to upgrade your TH would be dumb. Incentives like achievements or making collectors more useful would be good, but mandatory checkpoints are unnecessary and intrusive to gameplay for some. So there's less resources in the system, whoopdee-♥♥♥♥ing-doo.
Gems are prolly the only way to encourage their upgrades. So many varied reasons why people do not upgrade them which all ignore their long term benefits and ability to slow down troops. In a way they are extra walls at a minimum.
My fav reason is that it discourages people from raiding them.
It's about time we did something about people posting ideas in the general forum instead of the ideas forum.
I don't understand how anyone's collectors actually get raided. With your TH outside you get a shield within an hour of logging off.
