Roles and responsibilities
The Selection and Role of Leader
The Cavebears clan has a rotating leadership, the leadership term lasts two weeks. Leaders are selected from Elders.
This is the process by which Leaders are selected.
1) Following our barbaric festivities (which takes place usually on a Sunday evening) a new leader will be selected.
2) The current leader will be asked by the Cavebear Guardian to nominate a new leader from the Elders.
3) The leader should select an elder based on the following criteria
a) They are very active, both in chat and in donations
b) They have posted on this thread in the past week
c) They have actively engaged in our barbaric culture and are well known for their bloody exploits.
d) They have not served in the leadership role before.
e) They are willing to accept the leadership role.
4) The Guardian may, without explanation, veto any choice made by the Leader, in which case the leader must select a new candidate.
5) The leader may ask for the advice of the Elders.
Note. No ordinary member may become leader. Nor may any ordinary member seek to influence the Leaders decision.
The role of the Leader is as follows:
1) To act as an elder at all times. but in addition to this:
2) To support and moderate the actions of Elders
3) To cast deciding votes where Elder votes are tied.
4) To promote elders with, and only with, the approval of the Guardian. However the Guardian may veto the promotion of any Elder without explanation.
5) To ensure this thread remains on page one of Clan Talk in conjunction with the Guardian
6) To promote the healthy culture of Barbaric Viking behavior.
7) To select a new leader at the end of the week, subject to veto by the Guardian.
8) To remove from the clan any member or elder who fails to meet the required standards of the Cavebear clan (donations, activity and behavior). For the meantime Leaders will consult with the Guardian on members to remove. For the meantime this will occur on a Sunday (NZ and Australian time)
Brief summary of Leadership events. Every second Sunday the current leader removes required members, promotes those to elder as agreed with the guardian, passes leadership to a new leader.
The selection and role of the Guardian
Selection and Removal of the Guardian
1) The Guardian shall always be a previous Cavebear leader. Leadership experience from any other clan does not count.
2) The Guardian shall remain in position until:
a) They relinquish the position of Guardianship in this thread, in which case the Guardian may select the new Guardian.
b) The leader calls a non confidence vote in this thread or
c) At least three elders call a no confidence vote in this thread, in which case for both (b) and (c) the Leader must nominate a new Guardian.
d) The current leader may not nominate themselves as Guardian.
No confidence votes are subject to negative deadman's hand policy: Over half of existing members must vote to remove the Guardian by individually posting "No confidence" in this thread within a week of the no confidence vote being initiated.
The role of the Guardian
The Guardian is responsible for monitoring administration details regarding
1) Donation counts and who is not meeting Cavebear standards of activity and behavior. The guardian will advise the leader each Sunday as to who is to removed from the clan.
2) Ensuring that the original values, atmosphere and ethos of the Cavebear clan are maintained over time, and for initiating actions to preserve the Cavebear culture as the need arises.
3) To act as an elder at all times.
4) To advise the leader on all matters as and when either expedient or requested.
5) To promote and encourage the growth of Cavebear culture, which is gratuitously violent, barbaric, uncivilized, heinous, unwashed, rather smelly, and soaked in the blood of its enemies.
6) To intiate constitutional proposals, to moderate constitution proposals raised by the Cavebear community group, and to safeguard the constitution
The selection and role of Elders
The selection of Elders
At this point elders may only be appointed by:
1) The Guardian
2) The Leader with the approval of the Guardian.
Elders are selected on the following compulsory criteria:
1) Their willingness, as an elder, to sacrifice their time and effort to help other members and to ensure that rude, disruptive, immature and otherwise unsuitable people are kept out of our clan.
2) Their willingness to sacrifice their time and effort for the benefit of all our members by helping to promote our clan and our culture through the forums
3) Their willingness to sacrifice their time and effort for the benefit of all our members by participating in important clan policy discussions and votes.
Elders are selected on the following optional criteria.
1) Consistently high donation counts
2) Being active in clan chat
3) Being active in this thread
4) Giving highly quality advice and help to other clan members
5) Behaving as suitably barbaric Vikings
6) Geographical location.
7) Length of time within our clan.
It is entirely up to the Guardian and the Leader to decide the relative weighting given to each of the criteria. Some elders may be selected entirely on the basis of just one criteria, some may be selected on the basis of several or all criteria. The Guardian and Leader may ask Elders for their advice.
At this time: At no point should the number of elders exceed the number of members. Ideally elders should comprise approximately one third of membership numbers.
The role of Elders
As a group the Elders are the keystone of maintaining our clans culture and strength. Elders ensure that people joining our clan are comapatable with our ethos and will contribute not only the required donations, but are also encouraged to chat, to adopt Viking behavior if not already a Viking, and to be familiar with at least the first page of this thread.
Elders are responsible for the following:
1) Accepting new recruits. At this time all recruits to Cavebears are to be accepted. If there is not room the elder is to write on the rejection reply that "we are full, please join Icebears" You can tap the screen to bring up your keyboard so you can type this reply. Consider 47 members to be "full".
2) Screening new recruits. A soon as a new recruit is accepted the elders are to question them. How did they find our clan? Have they read the Cavebear thread? (this one). Do they know what to donate and what not to donate? How many donations are required?
If the new recruit does not give suitable answers, or evades the questions, responds aggressively, or fails to respond in adequate time, it is up to the discretion of the Elder to kick the new recruit out, with the agreement of another elder if at all possible. If in doubt, leave the new recruit alone, we can always weed them out later if they are not suitable.
3) KICK IMMEDIATELY, without consultation, any member, new or old, who does any of the following:
a) Deliberately uses offensive language obviously intended to offend, belittle or insult any member.
b) Attempts to poach our members.
c) Asks for eldership.
d) Continues to make inappropriate comments after having been warned by an Elder.
4) Warn only once if:
a) The new member wants to discuss eldership. Refer them to the first page of this thread. If they bring it up again, kick them immediately.
b) If the new member makes a mildly inappropriate comment.
Do not accept into the clan any recruit who
a) Asks to join so they can talk with a "friend"
b) Any ex-member who left without permission from the Leader or notice posted in this thread.
c) Any ex-member who was kicked from the clan.
Do accept any member from our sisters clan.
Promote immediately to Eldership any Elder, Leader or Guardian from the Riverbears or other sister clan
Still want to be an elder? Then read on...
Elders are responsible for posting in this thread at least once every two weeks.
Elders are expected to be familiar with the entire contents of this thread as pertains to our rules, requirements and culture (just read it a bit at a time if you prefer)
Elders are encouraged to participate in the Community group discussion
All members shall be considered willing to accept the position of Leader or Elder unless they notify both the Leader and the Guardian by PM otherwise.
Therefore it will not be necessary to ask a member if they would like to be Leader or Elder unless that member has made it plainly obvious by sending a pm to the Leader and Guardian stating that they do not want to be made into a Leader or Elder.
At all times Elders may ask to be demoted if they feel uncomfortable being in that position. For that purpose they can ask the Leader to demote them, either in chat with the Leader, or by PM.
Should it arise that a Leader is uncomfortable being in that position, then they should consult with the Guardian first by PM and arrange for a suitable replacement.
Well... That was weird...
Bears...
I have some disturbing news.
Even though we all know Mike went easy on Boomster and left him in more than perfect condition, beside the river.
This morning as I was walking towards the river to wash off the blood from my last raid (which was more than succesfull by the way)
The below scene was displayed before me...
Attachment 4943
Mighty Boomsters head was torn clean from his body...
Nothing to worry about though, as we all know injuries like this occur all the time in the cave and I stitched Boomster up in no time but still...
CUTTING OFF SOMEONES HEAD MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BIT OVERBOARD BEARS... THOR'S SAKE...

If real life suddenly rears up and slaps them in the face, they again may remain so long as they inform, either in chat or here, of their inability to meet donation requirements.
I feel confidant that we are familiar enough with each other to recognise any who wish to take advantage of this process, and to deal with them in an appropriately barbaric and painful manner. An Elder consensus should be all that is required to make this judgement.
What do you think?

I am in agreement with that idea (neither me nor my hand is dead) and I offer some of my
sleeping furs when needed.
I have personally experienced the great refreshment that a long meditation at THORs shrine can bring
to you (including the inevitable inactivity during that time).
Also some of us grow older and richer in levels, putting limitations on our vitality
(not me of course :-) I am more like the allegorical manifestaton of springtime in a perfect viking body :D
... still growing ... eager ... pushing to the top... full of dreams like a teenager ... running in front...
so some of us need some rest here and then (hahaha! ... I hope THOR never hears about it)
... and the back of the cave near the fire is well suited for that.
... rooms too be booked through prior reservation on the web - no credit card required. 3 weeks max occupancy.
(in the unlikely case someone approaches us with such a request on late sunday afternoon with 5 donations in that week
I might loose my temper however. I hope 8 bears will be around in such a case to prevent me ripping someone apart,
trampling on the fragments, which I intend to burn, with the ashes to be dissolved in acid and spilled into the sewer...you get the point)

who used to be my trainer for giants. His lack of ambition had the consequence that we gave him

He became food for fluffy, the giant icebear that usually hangs our with out leader (me at that time).
Last night we celebrated the first graduates of our newly revised giants training programm.
I tell you, they really rock now! Some experts on the matter say that they are now what they call "level 5".
As usual we had lots of mead, beer, singing, and games... and as usual it went a bit out of controll
There was some betting going on and one of our visitors (I think from MatchStixxs camp - but I was drunk,
so I could be mistaken) challenged my new giants, claiming that they are not sooo strong after all...
unless they can prove it ....
... by throwing a slave the full 25 yards from the fireplace over the cliff into the Fjord.
This is why I need your help now:
We lost 7 slaves in the course of settling this challenge.
I think that is an acceptable price for answering that matter of viking honour,
but the issue is that I only had 4, so we used 3 "other" slaves...
Now I feel obliged to reimburse the owner(s), but I don´t know who they belonged to.
Could you please identify yourself!
... and describe the slaves, so that I can raid adequate replacements for you - we only remember the
approximate weight.

This is UN BE LIEVABLE...
True, we had lots of beers and mead and some other substances distilled from the mushrooms that surround our villages but you have crossed the line! Medusa, my favorite dancing slave and the one responsible for training all slaves conguered in raids did not return home after your (I must admit fantastic) celebrations!
I thought that maybe she was still wandering in the woods trying to find her way home (we have all endured a walk of shame at some point) but I have had my barbarians searching the surrounding forrests for days now and they still had not returned with a sign of her... Sniff sniff
My sweet Medusa, used as shot-put fodder for Giants...
I do not know how you intend to repay this debt, but in my mind, only blood can settle this matter.
(slaps Mayana in the face with a mail glove)
You sir, have been challenged to a duel!
Small change to the process
The current process:
Brief summary of Leadership events. On Sunday the current leader will pass the leadership to a new leader. The new leader then gives the nominated bad donars a viking funeral. Rinse and repeat next Sunday.
Proposal:
That the above be changed so that the transfer of leadership take place after nominated members have been sacrificed to Thor.
The main reason for this is that it is likely the current leader has been more active and observant during the previous week so can therefore be better prepared and make an informed judgement as to the fate of low donators.
As always deadmans hand applies, should there be no objections this will come to pass.
throwing an axe realy fast
Hello vikings,
Since my giants finally have level5 they constantly get drawn into all kinds of weird quarrels with other vikings.
You might remember my dispute with Matchstickx (which was resolved in true viking fashion by Match winning an epic duel,
where he knocked me out with the 3rd empty barrel that he threw at me)
As I am currently sitting behind a very convenient shield I have time to tell you about the latest dispute
we got in:
Another viking giant claimed:
"I am twice as strong, I can throw my axe twice as fast,
so I kill my opponents in half the time, getting rich twice as fast"
Regardless of whether he actually is twice as strong my scholars argued that his reasoning is completely
flawed anyway.... and of course I will share our theoretical considerations with you:
1) Being "twice as strong" is probably supposed to mean that his arm can exert a force twice that
of my guy. That would indeed mean that he would axcellerate the axe twice as strongly.
BUT the length of his arm is not any longer, so his faster axe will be released after a shorter time - when
his arm is fully extended.
His stronger accelatation for a reduced amount of time translates to a subpropoportinal growth in
max velocity with growing strength.
2) All of these guys are really strong and their axes fly really fast, hence relativistic effects are not to be neglected
and the mass increase will dampen the velocity increase, again making it subproportional.
3) If this guy really achieves double max velocity of his thrown axe then it will be more affected by
atmospehic drag, which increases with velocity squared, so the drag will be quadruple initially!
Unless his target is really close his initially higher speed of the axe will decay more quickly with distance.
4) Also the conclusion that double speed of the axe makes double damage would be incorrect, because
the damage inflicted is likely propoportional to the kinetic energy deposited by the axe into the targets face,
being consumed by the (likely lethal) deformation work on this poor guys skull.
Energy however scales quadratically with speed, not linearly.
5) Assuming these guys actually do double damage (a mathematically grossly oversimplified assumption) that means...
... not much, because the military effect in reality is quantized : You kill a guy in CoC with 1, 2,3...n hits
with n being a natural number. Whether you see any net effect depends on your opponent.
If you are a giant and beat upon a lvl2 goblin for example then ANY giant (lvl3,4,5 or 6) will kill the goblin in
one shot - there would be no point in being stronger. (different of course if you smash into a lvl 9 wall).
Back to this mans original statement:
making double damage means beating your opponent in 50%-100% of original time, not necessarily "half"
... againt output subproportional to input.
6) Does this mean you get richer twice as fast?
Well, that depends a lot on what your limiting factor is ! (theory of constraints)
... If you just cant find any better loot then it is of minor relevance how fast you can 3-star someone :-)
... if your giants (regardless how strong) survive being grilled by 2 wiz towers only when supported by a healer
then you are not making more than 1 such attack in 20 minutes regardless of your giants strength.
However: If (given your stronger giants) you can do some attacks without healer or with less giants than before
then your frequency of attacks can go up.
Also you could possibly tackle tougher opponents with higher loot (the correlation between
defensive strength and loot is weak however)
but for that you need not only be stronger but also more flexible, clever and aggressive as a commander.
Somehow the "stong guy" who can throw the axe so fast had no interest in these thoughts to we
decided to get drunk together.

I didn't bother attacking this guy, because of the low resources, but this is the second time I've ran across him. You guys asked for a screenshot last time, so here it is. He didn't even have the outside ring of walls last time. I like that he has a block of fire walls on the right side. :)

Permission to Travel/Visit
Hello! This is Quasi. I'm posting here to inform and seek permission from my dear elder bears that I wish to travel to a friend's clan for a visit.
I have met my 200/wk for this week and I will return coming Monday.
Please let me know if its ok. Thank you!

picking a trophy range when "farming"
Fellow bears!
Most of us have decided to serve THOR by "collecting" resources as fast as possible and thereby growing
our strength as fast as possible. We are not overly distracted by the false charms of high trophy count
and the misleading perception of stength that it creats amongst those weak in imagination.
(Most of us would likely have kicked Jorge Yao from his thrown if we had time for such nonsense or at least saw sufficient
return-on-invest ... I for example was just busy lately...Players whose name ends in "...The Great" might see that differntly)
However, we position ourselves in a "trophy range" that allows us to be matched with prey that offers us
a good "return on invest" in terms of resources available to us versus the amount of elix that we need to
deploy to the battlefield.
The cost of our armies is largely depending on the level of troops that our baracks produce and hence it is
observable that in parallel with our own personal evolution we need to attack prey that has a higher offering
in resources (often we assume a full wipe-out of the enemy, but sometimes sufficient resources in outer
collectors is just as good). Consequently there is a tendency that high level farmers choose higher level hunting grounds.
I for example am level 65 with lvl5 giant, brb, arch, wiz lvl 2 healer and my choice was 1300-1400.
The choices we make are mostly based on own experience and reports by fellow bears, about where we
can expect what kind of prey population.
I say that we can throw that historic knowledge over board, because our prey has changed their behaviour.
Most astonishingly our prey also follows some weird thought process to choose themselves a trophy range.
My hypothesis is that the new league system has created incentives for our prey to move up in trophies.
(arguably not much has materially changed, because the incremental gain in "league bonus" is low compared to the base loot,
but relevant for this argument is the prevailing interpretation of the situation amongst our prey)
Unfortunately I have no mathematical evidence.
My guess is that around 1200 trophies everyone is moving up by 100-200 cups.
... and consequently we would need to follow.
Any opinion on that?
C U Mayana
(chief advisor on axe throwing physics)
P.S. There is nothing wrong with seeking the fun in this game by trying to achieve maximum trophys
... this article is adressed to those that do not seek fun that way (probably "do not seek fun that way yet")
'Tis with a heavy heart that I post this ....
Last week one of our Elders (Koolprince), failed to meet the donation requirement, but more importantly did not flag with the Cave that there were real life issues which influenced this. Easy decision .. Kick him, BUT, Kool has been with the Clan since its inception and, rightly or wrongly, that makes a difference. So started a vigorous debate amongst the other Elders as to how to deal with this. Fortunately there are other Clans within the Bear Empire that have lower donation requirements and as Kool is often only just over the line in donations, we thought it best to ask him to move to one of the other clans. Over three days, Kool was asked to move on four separate ocassions via clan chat. He agreed to do so, but then stayed. We were left with no choice but to kick him. This decision was not arrived at easily, and it gave no one pleasure to be forced to kick a long standing Elder.
The Cave is strong because we all choose to abide by our own rules, no one is exempt from those rules, but sometimes the execution of those rules requires further debate and consideration of the 'big' picture.
Footnote: Kool is now in SkyBears and we wish him well.
