Sometimes I wonder.. has the Offensive skill of the general CoC Population gone down?

And I'm not just saying the population in the forum, but I meant the coc population as a whole in general.

You see more and more thread showing off their bases with fantastic battle logs..

And yes, majority of them at 1000~1400 region.

Is it due to the introduction of the new wall breakers ?
In which a portion of the coc population didn't bother checking forum to even learn how to use the new wall breakers, leading to the weakening of their offensive ability.

Even I myself find more attacks that just SPAM all their wall breakers in one shot, maybe cause they don't know how to use them at all ?

Those are average bases, but you can see for yourself the battle logs.

And recently, I'm finding more and more abandoned bases.
Not that its a bad thing since it means better loot for us farmers.

But makes me think that apart from the forum coc population, the general coc population do not know how to effectively use the new wb, thus lowering their offensive ability.

Not really drawing much conclusion, but just something that I've picked up, open for discussion.

I found it tough at first to adapt, but once you figure out the new way WBs work, (almost) any TH8 base is breakable. I hesitate to say TH9 because maxed TH9s still give me alot of trouble (lvl 5 troops).

In my opinion it is all about adapting to the new WBs and learning the new method to attack. I agree that those that do not know about the new WBs will definitely continue to struggle until they learn how they now work.

It could be something a bit deeper than the new WBs. Maybe the older players who have the patience to wait for something to level up or who has the money to gem things are dying off leaving more younger players who have no patience and no money. These younger players having no patience to learn the fine intricacies of playing CoC are losing more of their battles than winning them. Me? I'm just old and cheap but have plenty of patience to wait...and wait...and wait...

Firing all one's walk breakers at once is actually extremely effective against many base types with the current AI. They do a fairly good job of splitting off to nearby junctions after the first wall blows with a minimum of attrition loss to defenses and a faster entry to the base you're attacking. I'd go so far as to suggest that people who aren't deploying this way on candidate bases are the ones behind on the wb learning curve. ;). This wasn't viable with the old wb AI but a spam deployment is very much viable with the current AI.

But I've posted previously I do think it dumbs down the game. That's a good thing for new players as it lowers barriers to entry, but it's a bad thing on the back end as it makes the endgame less interesting.

Very much hoping they find a way to add some complexity back both to army deployment and base design with their next update.

I really blame the trend of players leaving their th outside getting free shield then never get the chance to watch replay to learn what works and what doesn't. How many people figure out how Wb worked on first day? Most were complaining about not enough attacks on their base, instead of going out of their way to experiment with Wb like junliang and few others.

I do agree that the new AI seems to be dumb'ing down the game. However, I think it will get a bit more interesting once we've figured out how to abuse it, like we did with the old one. :o

As for the original question, I think the reason why there seems to be an increasing number "bad" players right now is because of the new WB AI. A lot of players still don't fully understand the AI and just choose to stop using them, yielding in less effective attacks.

Hm, I think you meant lvl 6 troops ?

I agree with the learning curve.. really takes practise and getting familiar with the new behavior, not something a leisure player can pick up in a few battles.

Hm, maybe. Like the heroes update, where "many" rich and trophy hunters declare that it was game over for them as they didnt like the path supercell was approaching..
Same, its a game to me, no pressure, not too dumb a game either to learn and have fun with.

Agreed regarding firing all wall breakers at once, since for some bases, it allows them to bypass certain decoy as their "current position" is able to pin point a better path to their resource storages.. which is why segmentation is so important now.

We all thought that it will dumb down the game, as supercell's sneak preview of the new wall breaker seems wayyyy too easy to use as we thought it targets junction easily. But now ? I still think there is a relatively steep learning curve, rather than being easy.

It restricts us defensively definitely.
But offensively, it restricts a certain type of army composition, allowing certain army composition to have an advantage over the others. Personally, I find the change beneficial for my army composition and attacking strategy.

I guess the impact of the new wb varies with army composition + attacking strategy/pattern.

Actually, I've been losing a lot of trophies (don't really care) raiding bases just to see how the new WB AI reacts in different situations. I've also been playing around with the barbs for the same reason.

The only way I can stop wall readers from destroying me is a lot of boxed.... But this one is gonna take a lot longer to abuse ....
well there are an increasing number of noobs and attacks in COC so we pros and experts should take advantage of it :)... People don't like the wall breakers 2 space so they probably changed army composition....

No, I wouldn't say so. I find the attacks to be about the same against me, and I think the general consensus amongst my clan is about the same.

The large loots, epic failures, etc, etc, seem to be the same. There does seem to be a sporadic wave of dead accounts here and there, but who knows.

Over time, I had always conjectured that over the months, more players would find these forums, and learn about various strategies, glitches, etc... but I'm always surprised at how many new and old players never find their way here.

Long winded way of saying, no, it seems about the same level of "offensive skill" over the past 6-8 months I've seen. People have learned to adapt to various new toys and troops, as expected. There will be skeptics, whiners, and clingers-to-the-past, but by and by, the community adapts.

I shall wait for the day when its figure out then.

So far these few strategy have been cooked up
-stripes + spring traps to force wb to take a certain path(doesn't really work against sprinkle attack pattern)
-double layer to force wb to attack other single wall compartments
-T Junction with atleast 2 wall spacing to prevent exposure to 2 compartment
-Tesla active/inactive to manipulate potential targeting of wb at the same deployment spot.(But doesn't work well with people who spam wb)

And indeed, its really not easy to chew up walls by simplying using troops like barb/goblins to break through.
And who says leveling up walls are useless now ? :rolleyes:

I know this is the wrong place to mention this, but in one of the raids against my base, a couple of the attacker's goblins went all the way to the other side of my base to reach a collector that was deep inside a funnel of walls. It got killed just when it got to the collector, btw. Thought that was a little interesting. Dumb little bastids.

To make any near scientific claim to talk about the general CoC population:

1. Get a sample size of atleast 374 videos of attacks on his base (with margin of error of 5%, and confidence level 95% given the total CoC player count is 14000 (from the total downloads so far).
2. Compare the current aggregate wins (inclusive of all 1*, 2*, 3*) to the aggregate wins of previous release on the sample.
3. Compare the current aggregate 1* wins to previous release
4. Compare the current aggregate 2* wins to previous release
5. Compare the current aggregate 3* wins to previous release.

In the above data mined, we are yet to simplify the multiple combinations of offense troops and their levels used in the 374 attacks and select one standard 'test combination' to get any idea of whether the CoC players are getting *more* skillful or *less* skillful as days pass.

As neither me nor anyone speaking on this thread has access to that kind of data, anything said here is mere speculation, killing time and shooting darts on a very big map.

I regularly send a bunch of WB's to kill of a wall unnecessarily. What happens is I am very careful with my WB, and I might send one or two to kill a wall. After a hole has been made I like to flood in a bunch of barbs....but...ooops....I could of sworn I switched to barbs....there goes all my WB's!!!!

There's a pretty broad swath of the game that isn't coming back regardless of the adjustments the community makes. And a lot of it doesn't relate to my ability to abuse either the past or current AI. As an example, base design has always been my biggest area of in-game interest. I used to really enjoy the unusual bases shaped like spiders or bugs and the like. They were aesthetically pleasing and yet could be surprisingly effective when you started to break them down. I'm fairly confident in saying that regardless of the adjustments the community makes to exploiting the wb AI, that the days of those bases are behind us. The mechanisms which made them work have been preempted by the new AI. There are good things about making wbs simpler to use which I've acknowledged, but acknowledging the good doesn't preclude me from recognizing the bad nor do I believe development choices are a world of bland equivalences without trade-offs. I've opined in more detail on the trade offs I think SC is making elsewhere (and I largely stand by what I've written) but my intent in replying to this thread wasn't to reopen that discussion.

I don't really have an opinion on the skill question. I replied to this thread because wb spam was used as an example of people who don't understand the current wb AI which I disagree with. It's possible the specific attacks being referenced weren't appropriate for wb spam, but I'm still playing with wb spam myself as I try to figure out which base types it's most efficacious against. Experimentation isn't equivalent to the absence of skill.

I also think they'll likely have to iterate on the current AI before it can be exploited the way you suggest. For people paying close attention, it seems remarkably buggy although perhaps it's working as intended from the perspective of SC. I will say that it's easy to document examples where the wbs break the rules SC has offered to govern their behavior regardless of if we want to call that a "bug." This apparent "bugginess" makes it hard to iterate sufficiently to exploit the AI's quirks.

I've noticed the abandoned village phenomenon also others are referencing, but SC is going to have data regarding in game activity orders of magnitude better than any speculation I could offer and I'd feel silly making assertions regarding it. I will say that their Facebook likes have been shooting through the roof and in the face of the vitriol I saw posted in the wb announcement there. So even if they're losing one set of players with this change, they may be gaining another. If that's the case, it was perhaps also a predictable response to a change like this.

I agree to what Illustris said. I have a dumber looking base with lot of boxes. I was facing lot of revenge attacks, last week in particular. Due to new wb, its impossible to protect 1-2 storages out of 9. I feel TH8 are braver in revenges and wb helping them.

Abandoned bases are always there, due to update week, more people stayed online and the loot was less. I hope it continues to be better, just as it has been for last 2 days. I am TH9

I agree, and wonder whether the spawn of box bases is reducing the learning curve. With so, so many bases adopting the same layout, the likelihood for creative tactics reduces. They are also really dull, and I tend to skip to onteresting looking bases to attack, even though I have more fails because they have new concepts I yet need to learn.

Lastly, let us not assume CoC is about having a PhD in military sttrategy. It's good that it is playable by novices, or people will be put off quickly.

Please ask yourself a question (all readers), are you more satisfied when you get an abandoned base with 400k+ resources or when you rob 150k gold from a high level difficult base. The rush/ kick in the latter keeps you coming back to the game.
But due to bases built like silly boxes (mine included) being opened by wb, no base is untouchable and you can get 3/9 storages (makes more sense to attack these difficult bases in revenge). Please tell me, what is the difference between lvl90+ and lvl40+ now in regard to wb, if both can bulk deploy them and wb decide where to go and move to next box after the first. :confused:

I find that the new AI makes you have to be more patient and wait for the archers/wizards/dragons/minions/mr t's to destroy the buildings behind the walls, and then deploy your WB to penetrate to the middle.

I don't object to being raided by low levels. I raid them often enough. But I agree with your first point about the tough raids being the ones that maintain my interest. If the current box spam holds up as the best defense against wbs (and I suspect it will) my interest in this game does decline

On the other hand this game changes every four weeks with new updates. I'd like to believe that SC will make adjustments elsewhere to add some interest back to base design that was removed with the wb blast radius buff and AI fix. But we shall see!

That said, it's harder to steal all resource you focus to and stop prior to 40%.

That's where I am afraid, most of people will say that new wb are awesome and better to raid. So, SC will not do anything that is not seriously broken. But laws of economics tell me that if you release more and more money, the value for that diminishes, especially to those who have means to earn it better / have less usage (read high level players)

I hope the next update doesn't ask you to fix troops and automated process decided whom to rob and how to spend.

Gobs running after resources, teslas attacking pekka, air mines for dragons don't affect the game significantly. But these wb are killers (of interest).

Before anyone says, I promise to move mines/ collectors in a corner and handover leadership to someone before I quit. It may happen sooner than I hope:(

You guys might find box bases to be boring, but it can get complex depending on how you allocate the segmentations.

Simple 3x3 boxes everywhere ? or L shape compartment followed by a 6x6 ?

Certain box pattern can bait thinking players to attack from a particular part of the base with more traps, i.e, easier to create wb path to take atleast 75% of the resources.

Personally as a TH8, i'm now more daring to fight against th9, even if they have 2 xbows whatsoever, because previously, say fighting a spike base where diagonal wall breaking is not applicable, you just have to ram your wall breakers into that long spike. If that spike + segmented joint is more than 10 walls, myself carrying 20 wall breaker might not even be possible.
So what, rage + barb/gob and break through ?

Now just increase your range attacking fire power(i.e more archers) and have proper distractions for these ranged firepower and you can create nice attacking path to get to atleast 75% of their storage.

Say hannibal's pre-update base, till now I'm still unable to crack it without using more than 20 wall breakers, and how is it possible for level 5 troops to drill against level 9 walls with level 7 mortar/wiz tower ?

Those new wall breaker certainly gave me a fighting chance offensively.

Well my current box spam just absorbed a 15 wb, two spell, max pop attack from a th9 bonbee with no storage losses. With an empty clan castle on my part. (Before any real bonbees throw down the gauntlet, I think this one is an imitation although I have a hard time keeping track.) I certainly have no problem with shifting the table of balance towards offense and lower town halls in particular given the way I've beaten up on them over the months. But hopefully I'll still give you a run for your money if I come up in your attack queue. ;)

And I still hope they add some interest back to base design down the road. I'm happy for the people who enjoy box optimization, but personally I find it to be boring as hell.

Makes me think you are playing with a single core base.. which is highly unlike your style.

But segmented base and 0 storage loss against 15wb and 2 spell, 220 troop army attack ?
Either your base is epic strong or thats a massive fail..

For all the time I spend thinking about a wall breaker defensive layout I seldom get attacked by anyone who can use wall breakers worth a damn. Most people who attack my base don't even use a meat shield and let them get picked off by defenses. Those that do use meat shields don't time the mortars at all.

most of the attacks on my base that are successful are a heavy onslaught of lvl6 giants/archers plus an archer queen. I just had two pretty solid attacks like which make me think it is time for a redesign ( the 8 dragon, 3 lightning attack is something ill never defend against, although he only got 3 out of 4 compartments!):

Right now I'm playing with an unsegmented core. You're right that it's not my style and I likely won't stick with it but I wanted the wall tiles to experiment with perimeter arrangements.

I also don't want to oversell the current design. This guy launched his wbs well, but the rest if his attack was surprisingly fail given his level. He did use two heroes though. BK was level 7. Don't recall about the AQ.

How much DE do you have? Maybe if you have a lot and put it somewhere seemingly easy to get to it will provoke attacks.

Hannibal, I see your points. The new AI did take a lot of freedom of creativity away from base designing. I also agree that experimentation is probably what we're seeing as "bad players."

As for you being clanless.. I seriously spent a good 10-15 minutes looking through "The Bullies" clans to find your base the other day. :mad::rolleyes:

because these wb are smart now and its easier to open holes at the right spot, most active players have segmented their base instead of using the old "eggcrate" i myself am one of them. But for farming it also gor harder, because you need to almost 3 star a village to get the max loot available. Good bases i feel lucky if i get 1/2 of the available resources.

People have a tendency to brag so screenies of successful defenses are meaningless.

Why do people keep saying wb's are smarter? They aren't. They're just stupid in a different way. If the outside of a base presents the wall breaker with cells 1 building thick, the wb's will open up those adjacent cells before penetrating to the inner wall. This would still be an improvement if the wb's didn't take up 2 slots.

Right now I'm playing with an unsegmented core. You're right that it's not my style and I likely won't stick with it but I wanted the wall tiles to experiment with perimeter arrangements.

And nothing happened clan-wise. I'm just hiding out and trying to provoke attacks and revenges against me. ;)

I also don't want to oversell the current design. This guy launched his wbs well, but the rest if his attack was surprisingly fail given his level. He did use two heroes though. BK was level 7. Don't recall about the AQ.

the new wb ai is maddening. it ignores the fact that penetration, and not opening up "trapped" buildings, is the goal of pretty much anyone who attacks. unfortunately, i think that in most cases, you're now better off just spamming your wbs at once to drill into a base. it's high risk for high reward. it also flies in the face of people trying to maximize efficiency because people who try to use wbs sparingly will inevitably open up useless exterior compartments (or watch them widen existing holes).

if supercell didn't want bases to use super effective wall spikes -- and i can think of plenty of reasons why they wouldn't -- there are so many easy fixes they could have implemented. this new wb ai is asinine.

The previous wb's had a quirky challenge to their use and deployment, an aspect of the game which kept me interested.

The new wb's are so much easier to use, whether you spam a lot and just wait for the BOOM or even if you utilize careful placement. I find them dull and boring and as a consequence, the challenge has been lost and I find I no longer play as much.

In terms of base design Ive always had a heavily segmented base but even those can easily be breached by 'spam wb' to reach the core. In 'improving' the AI of the wb, SC took something away from the game and for me it is the careful consideration of well placed defenses which act in unison to take down tier 1,2 & 3 troops. Base designs will devolve to maze like structures, and the symmetry which some find appealing will be lost :(
