What troop is your personal favorite to upgrade first?
Archers. I use them in my farming strategy.

Completely depends on what stage of the game you're in. Early on, it'll probably be archers. At TH9, hogs, balloons, minions are important. At TH10 you'll need wizards, golems, witches
What has upgrading AQ got to do with lab upgs that cost elixir...

Barbarians, when i get a new TH level i'm always low on elixir, because i try to upgrade all the useful elixir stuff in order to make this resource useless and put the storages in the first line of walls, so barbarians are relatively cheap to upgrade and they gain considerable fire power.
I would vote the archer in. 1 housing space, relatively high DPS, ranged troop and looks AWESOME at level 6 :D
