OP, it depends on what level you are.
If you're a th7 taking down other th7s use 3 lightnings on one AD and start your dragons in a line towards the other remaining AD. That's 3 stars everytime.
Now th8s can do tricky things to stop dragons. If you can reach two ADs quickly, go with 3 lightnings still on zap away the one remaining air defense. Watch out for storages and gaps in the base that will mess up pathfinding. CC troops can also throw your dragons off the right path, but you don't need to lure, just realize your dragons will target them and deploy accordingly.
If you can't reach the air defense quickly, I'd go with 2 rages and one heal. Use the heal to help mitigate damage from the air defense and rage usually at the CC troops and again near AD/TH. Some people like all rage, but really, that last rage ends up being used on so few dragons it doesn't help that much.
The big thing on dragons is deployment. Dragons look 3 spaces ahead and attack the nearest target. You need them going into those ADs to take them out before they kill all your dragons. Priority 1. Gaps and outside buildings and even the base design can cause your dragons to spread out. You can alter outside buildings with archers, bk, or even a dragon. These same things are also good for taking down builder's huts put in corners, as these can sometimes keep you at a 99% two star.
Edit: Oh, and I always liked loons thrown in the army comp and/or the CC. They can also be handy in taking down air defenses. High level archer towers also give dragons a beating. Try to get them early on too if you can. Storages and high hp buildings are going to really slow down your troops.

For spread out air defences take 3 lightning spells. Knock out the hardest-to-reach AD and deploy the dragons to hit the remaining two.
If the air defences are clustered in the centre of the base then two rage and a heal is best.
I always use 3 Lightening Spells + Rage. I recommend you read the Dragon Attack Strategy guide from inspired, it is really helpful!
3 centralized ads, go with either 3 rage or 2 rage 1 heal.
if 2 ads are close to one another and near the side of the base. use 3 lightning spells to zap away the ad that's furthest away from the other 2 and place dragons to destroy the remaining ads as early as possible.
For regular attacks- all rage. For cw- depends... Hard to reach- zap one or both if together. Easy to reach or going for 3*** or low level ad's- all rage
I think rage spells is a bit overrated because if the dragons decides to go around the base you fail miserably while all the AD's just pounds your dragons. Lightning spells at least guaranteed your face with one less AD and can have a higher probability of getting 50%. It's safer.
Against 3 AD's, I usually like to bring 3 lightning spells and a small pack of high lvl hogriders(preferably CC troops) to take out a 2nd AD assuming its not deep into the core. This leaves just one AD left for the dragons to take out. In most cases you don't need to lure out enemy CC troops because mass dragons usually eat them up.
You are 100% correct... I watch people over and over try to use dragons with rage and heal spells fail and/or only get 2 stars because there are 3 or 4 ADs pounding away at them. Many of them are not convinced that you take out the opposite AD of where you are going to attack and you can almost 3 star all the time.
All rage. Spread your dragons out in a "v" rage to get to the air defenses. Ballons or hogs in the clan castle to hit the easiest air defense and take it out.

TH7 - 3 lightning at the higher AD, then drop all nearest to the other AD
TH8 - (i) 3 lightning at the most difficult to get AD, then spread at the other side nearest to the other AD.
(ii) with heal and rage.
My TH8/TH9 clanmates are quite good with method (i) above.
TH9 - mainly heal & rage. Sometimes 3x lightning works also. If lucky, can 3* TH9 with L6 AD or lower.
TH10 - L4 dragons with rage, and maybe 1 heal. Can get 1-2*
Some say not much skill needed.
TH7, super easy, lightning the ADs, deploy, and watch from the airplane hovering above(with the chief, you inside!).
TH8, I've attacked a TH9 and gotten 50% 2*. Use lots of rage. For TH9 attacking the same, probably the same except add a heal maybe since some TH9's are smarter than others.
Dragons do not decide anything.
If they go around the base, then you did not funnel them properly.
People don't seem to understand how placement is important. Placement shouldn't only depend on where the AD are located. You need to predict their pathing by checking for any gaps, for a BK or CC troops possibly luring your dragons towards the center, etc.
Dragons is an easy win provided the base is either poorly designed, or the attacker knows how to funnel properly.
This is true. The safest option is to take three lightning spells with you. It's basically impossible to mess it up. But it sounds like your having trouble making the dragons follow a particular path. To prevent dragons from going around the outside of a base, take out some of the peripheral buildings to force the dragons into the middle.
2 rage and a heal spell (or 3 rage) is much easier to screw up. But if done right, this spell combo is generally best.
