This thread has been created to discuss Supercell's money-hungry business model. I'd like to say that Supercell isn't money-hungry, but the way they develop their games is. In other words, how Clash of Clans is a freemium game. If you don't know what that means,:
Freemium:
Free to play
Multiple currencies, one premium currency that can be purchased with real cash but is difficult to obtain otherwise
Upgrades, training troops, etc. takes real time, often up to weeks, but can be sped up with gems, which cost real money
Insane $100 micro-transactions
How games should be made:
$0.99 download fee, or simply a download fee - not required to be $0.99, but many are in the mobile gaming world
Single currency, not too difficult to obtain
All actions in the game are completed instantly, no waiting 2 weeks for your town hall 10
No micro-transactions
Freemium business models, in my opinion, are bad for the gaming world. I doubt anyone in Supercell who can change their business model will listen to this thread, but it's here for them to read nonetheless. Companies that make games started somewhere, usually with very few people. Those original developers must've cared more for the game than for the money. They spent their time in school and college learning to make games. They most definitely have played a fair amount of games too to make game developing their profession. They know what makes a game good and what makes it frustrating and time-staking. As people who've played games, they should know how to make them without these greedy business models, despite the large amounts of profit made from these freemium models.
