Do they expire? I had a clan mate tell me to use the box, but I want to keep it.
They don't expire. But if I was in your shoes, I should listen to your clanmate. Once you have a gembox, there won't sawn any more untill you harvest it. They spawn with a radius of 1 per week, and f you leave it out, you won't get a new one. And they are worth 25 gems.
