How many gem boxes can you get at once?

I was wondering if anyone knew how many gem boxes you could get at once? Can you just let them build up for months and have them all over?

Or can you only get one at a time so that you have to clear it before getting another?

You can only get one at a time and you have to remove that one to get another

I believe I read in the initial communication that only one spawns at a time. I've been clearing mine ASAP and have gotten 4 already.
