I think you should have started your hog upgrades a while ago. Going to TH9 with them at level 1 means it will be so long before they can be a viable force at lvl 4 or 5. And not just that, you will want to use that DE for the AQ instead of for hogs, so you will struggle with DE upgrades for a while. That's why I was so adamant to max my hogs at lvl4 at TH8, before I could even be tempted to spend it on the AQ.
But what's done is done and staying at TH8 won't help you earn DE any faster. My suggestion would be to have at least 40k DE once you reach th9 so at least you have a lvl 1 AQ. Then dump all the DE into hog upgrades until lvl5, then continue with AQ upgrades.
The extra DE drill and max lvl6 drills will really help you earn extra DE, beyond having a strong army to raid for DE.
You're far from a premie. Just go to TH9 whenever you want.
Oh, don't fall asleep on those teslas either. lvl 6 and 7 teslas are absolutely defensive beasts.
I have a standing policy for myself to upgrade and build everything possible before each T.H upgrade. Just my personal feeling that if it was not something you SHOULD do, it wouldnt be available at that lvl.
I would upgrade everything before the t.h.

Hogs are awesome for clan wars, and also simple gold farming (and even elixer down low), but if you leave upgrading them until TH9, you won't get it done until you're about TH10...
Also, if you are bored as a TH8, well who says you won't get bored at TH9? Once you get some of the simple stuff done at TH9, it only gets harder to save up for stuff, which takes longer to upgrade, and so on... The end of TH8 is just a taste of what's to come! If you don't enjoy a long-running cycle of raiding, saving, then eventually upgrading one thing, well TH9 and TH10 may not be for you...

You can continue upgrading your defenses during the TH9 upgrade.

Concerning Hogs, I really just dont use them.... I will upgrade anyway, but there is a reason they are noobs. I upgrade the stuff I use (Hence the level 4 minions ;))

Max teslas and walls... My friend and i relatively upgraded th at same time (i stayed behind to do walls) his defenses are higher than me but in the long run i helped my self out by utilizing the th8 loot. Also teslas take forever to upgrade but L7 teslas are amazing so i would reccomend getting ur teslas th8 maxed
I am lvl 78 TH 8. I left with;
Walls : 33 pieces to lvl 8
Troops: Pekka to L3, Minion to L3 & L4, Hog to L4, Valk to L2 and golem to L2
Spell: lightning to L5, Heal to L5 and Rage to L4 & L5
I choose to stay longer in TH as I have more option of bases to raid compare to TH 9. I mean base with low penalty loot like TH 7, TH8, TH9 & TH10. For me DE drill don't help much.
I have four builders, two for def upgragde, one for elixir-building upgrade and another for walls upgrade.
Well, if u r bored much,just upgrade it. 😄
I'm more or less at the same stage as you but have half skull walls and teslas are all level 4/5.
I'm in no rush to go TH9 though...
