My friend has got a TH8 camp and advises to me not to spend my 1k gems on a 4th builder because I will need the gems for Dark Elixir later on.
I'm currently on TH6 and my builders are constantly busy. I often get "stuck" with tons of gold and elixir without the ability to use them (except for the laboratory).
So, should I use my gems to recruit a 4th builder or save it for later parts in the game?

Get the 4th builder for sure! It will be worth it, no point in spending gems on buying resources. Most useful use of gems if boosting barracks or if needed, gem the builder time. Again get the 4th bulilder definitely, if you can't keep all 4 builders busy all the time, then no need for 5th.
You will get more benefits from saving your gems to get your builders asap, than wasting them in finishing buildings/research...
Don't listen to your friend DE can be found. That 4th builder will be a big help.

Dark Elixir can be farmed.
Use the gems to get the 4th builder, buy more gems, use those gems to get the 5th builder.
Chiming in... YES!! definitely spend the gems on the builder. As others have said, resources can be farmed.

And since I brought that up, is it really that bad to farm for DE?
He told me it takes lots of time to achieve the Heroes.
Heroes and the ability they unlock are great, I speak mainly for the Barbarian King, since I'm still maxing TH8. I maxed TH7 from farming and left the walls after all defenses where done.
By the time I finished defenses I had to many elixir, and nowhere to spend it, so I went for all dragon raides and made the necessary gold to finish walls and enough dark elixir to max the king (lvl 5) and upgrade minions and hogs to lvl 2. So when I finally hit TH8 I had two days of hogrider pending in the lab.

It's incredibly easy. Sure dragons will also get you to the storages but u have to first get all your barracks up to level 9 then wait a ton of time for the dragon army to train....
I wouldn't advise this method to anyone who wants to farm de with a modicum of efficience. FWIW with my method I farmed my BK lvl 5 and all my DE lab upgrades well before my defensive buildings were done.
If you are as active as your friend I would recommend saving the gems for resources. The reason I say this is, the only reason to spend gems on resources is if you are not willing to take the time to actually play the game and take the resources.
If you buy the builder, keep him busy 24/7. If you havent been keeping 3 builders busy 24/7 then dont bother buying more.
This is just personal opinion, but you only care to keep 3 builders busy 24/7, then I would still say that getting the 4th builder to leave permanently available to dump gold into walls is still a better use of those 100 gems than whatever amount of DE 1000 gems can buy you (I think it should be somewhere around 23,xxx DE for 1000 gems).Quote:

Why would he not let you use your gems to get that 4th builder? Is he nuts or what? Getting additional builders is the most essential part of the game (besides gathering resources), if you can utilize all of them at once and minimizing the time that they're idle. Don't take anymore advices from your friend especially on how to spend your gems wisely.
The fourth builder is totally worth it, and you do not want to be stuck with a lot of gold/elixir vulnerable.
