I'm TH9 moving up through crystal (@ 2214 cups at the moment), trying to get to masters as effeciently as possible.
Using 9 giants, 9 WB, archers, barbs, & 4-5 wizzards - all maxed. So far i'm finding bases i can easily 2 star... but...
... what trophy range do i need to bring out the BIG GUNS - either my max hogs or my max balloons / minions. I am inexperienced using these armies, so any tips army compositions, things to look for, be aware of would be appreciated!

Well, hogs can destroy pretty much every TH9 base if you use them and spells smartly.
Hey Sparks, I would recommend you to switch to Balloons/Minions once you get to the point where you see that your current army composition isn't cutting it anymore. If you see you have hit a wall and can't progress further then it's time for you to switch armies.
If you don't mind spending dark elixir on hogs then I would say use them to get to Masters III the fastest. I would advice for you to definitely avoid TH 10's with infernos no matter how tempting and just attack TH 9's. You can 3 star any TH 9 with max hogs and full heal spells equipped. Consistent 3 stars while using your heroes and clan castle troops for clean up will get you to Masters that fastest. But if you see that you can no longer find TH 9's to attack then...
switch to Balloons/Minions. That is the best army composition to attacking TH 10's and getting consistent 1 stars. There's tons of guides on the internet on how to do proper Balloonion raids.
Definitely switch once you've hit your wall though.

Allright sparks. If you are using hogs, then its best to avoid TH10s on MULTIPLE target infernos. Single target at lvl 1 should be fine if u have lvl 5 hogs. Beware: Xbows and ITs have lots of HP, so they take time to kill. Disco infernos (multiple) will kill your hogs (healing doesn't work). You can deploy them in 2 separate lines, just make sure you bring out the CC and the BK/AQ. They will devastate your hogs, especially if you find wizards in the CC. Always bring heal spells.Quote:

With the hog army (haven't used them yet), do you bring a few barbs / archers to lure CC & heroes? And is the mop up army best as archers in CC, or something else?
ps love the idea of ballons & dragons... great as an over night build!
I used 12 giants, 8 wb, 4 wizards and the rest archer and barbs + 1 rage spell to get to crystal 1. Then
24 hogs, 8 wizards, 3 heal spells, 20 barbs and 20 archers to get to master 3.
P.S: This was at TH8
During the clan push oncewe were within 100 cups of Masters we would start to fail, and it gets worse in the last 50. But, we were TH8s. TH9s can get to Masters easily with Mass hogs.
I am a TH 9 as well and I recently pushed from 1700 and up to 3291 which is my current trophy record. If your goal is to reach master and you are willing to spend some resources I would suggest hogs for the fastest progression possible. I bet there are many that can teach you hogs better then me, but I used hogs up to 2700 and this is my army composision:
32 Hogs
44 Archers
40 Barbarians
4 Healing Spells
This army takes around 30 minutes to train and if you do boost SF (Spell Factory), all spells will be ready by then.
The basic stuff, lure out CC, BK and AQ and then you go in with your hogs. Just make sure to avoid multi inferno and you are good to go!
I personally bring 4 giants with me to lure CC since they can get past buildings such as camps and barracks, makes it a lot easier. Since BK and AQ have a huge radius you can simply use barbs to lure them. Then bring them to a corner to kill them off with your army composition.Quote:

My army composition for hogs when I was a TH 9 was 32 hogs, 4 giants and the rest a mix of barbs and archers. For your clan castle request only archers or wizards since they're a nice and quick clean up crew when they're in bunches. All heal spells. 4 heal spells is better than 3 heal spells and a lightning to take out their CC. You'll appreciate that extra heal spell, trust.
IME it gets tough to hang around Crystal 1, 2400 or so...you see very few TH8s, and more and more Maxing TH9-10s
with emphasis on max TH10s, with dual Disco-Infernos.. which totally suck.. but if they are centralized you can nip around the base and get that 50% win in most cases..you will need ALL spells available and probably Both heros though, for EVERY RAID.. (don't bother otherwise) CC full of lvl 6 Loons (or Wizards 6)or a lvl 4 Dragon, or Hogs if you go Hoggin'
if you are in expierenced with B'linion or Hogs start now. its better to fail now where it wont sting so much losing 30 trophies at 47-49% is a buzz kill for sure. and you need to recover those lost trophies as well as gain more.
it may help to farm out the TH and decorate it in the corner or edge of the base, so the Trophy hunters snip it and hopefully leave you be otherwise. its worth it to only keep losses to 1 star. up in Cry 1 the TH 10s Hogs and B'linion with 5 spells (including Freeze) can wipe you out easily, even if you are maxed out or nearly so like myself (on my main) so Defense is really not going to help you much IME.
my main army was 24/50 B'loons/Minions (lvl 5) gets great loots and mostly wins against the TH10s
I recommend you use the next fee judiciously!! if you have any inclinking you may lose, then skip that base. if you don't have your spells then wait, but don't log off unless you are going to bed or will be off a while, raid in sessions, get 18-25 trophies before you log off, ride your shield too, don't get on raid and leave, its counter productive IME.. as is farming, only raid for loot AFTER you have won astar!
its kind of a time kill, so be prepared to spend a lot of time on the game. if you have boost gems, then it makes it a lot easier since B'linion cook time is horrendous IMO.. and you need the spells for sure, and maybe Heros too. so boost spell factory too..but its an effective tactic.
If you go Hogs, take 30-36, and have some wizards baking you up, then use the heal spells. put them in clusters of 3-4 defenses so the hogs get healed while they get pummeled by multiple turrets. (note it eats up a lot of Dark, but is also effective for TH9, those anti hog rings will ruin a raid though, beware..) I didn't use hogs much as Im trying to upgrade my Heros and other Dark troopsin my Lab..try to target bases with 1500 Dark or so; so you can recoup the losses from making the Hog army
above 2400 you may want to take 28 loons and fewer Minions. but make sure you have all spells and heros available for each raid for maximum effectiveness.
