I thought it had to do with the strength of your base and not trophees. I have a nearly maxed TH 8 and dropped to sub 200 for the heck of it. The next war a TH7 in my clan gets a TH9 as recommended target and I get a TH5 as recommended target at the bottom of their clan.
I'm the highest upgraded in my clan.
Also my second account never gets attacked after a clan war when I don't attack with it. So I have full collectors every time and nobody attacks it. Is that normal?Quote:

Clan wars matchmaking is based on clan size and base strength. War loot is calculated by base level and you don't lose any loot when your war base is attacked. You certainly ask a good question on your Recommended Base matchups...
Did you have a very similar trophy level to the TH 5? Did your clanmate have very similar trophies to the TH 9?
As stated before the Recommended Base should be based on the calculated base strength and has nothing to do with trophies. I'd be inclined to say it was a weird bug you ran into, but very odd.
Not sure if this is affecting the recommended targets in your case or not but...
The recommended target can change quite a bit during the war. If your original recommended target has already been attacked and been defeated (even 1 star lost, I think), the system will pick a new recommended target for you. Is it possible that when you checked for recommended targets, all other bases closer to your actual level were already attacked, while your friend had checked at the beginning of the war when all bases were available?
if you noticed the clans go by trophies too. i havent faced a clan with 1k more or less trophies than mine.

Who should I attack? What is the recommended target?
The main goal of attacking in a clan war is to earn stars for your clan by earning them in battle. It is important to attack targets that you think you can defeat. If you fail in your attacks, not only will you not earn stars for your clan, but you will also not earn any bonus loot!
During battle day, you will always have a recommended target visible on the war map. The recommended target shows you the closest match for your attack strength based on the defense strength of your opponents. Base layout isn’t taken into consideration, though, nor is your favorite attacking style, so it is a good idea to also check a few bases above it and a few bases below it to see if you can find a target you like better.
Before attacking, it is also a good idea to view replays of your clan’s earlier attacks on that target, if they exist. It might provide you valuable information about traps, defending Clan Castle troops, and the effectiveness of certain attack strategies.
The recommended target is the base closest to your strength, so if there's a maxed TH10 and a maxed TH5 in the war and no in-betweens than a regular TH8 would probably get matched with a TH5 if I'm not mistaken. Things that count towards clan matching:
Town Hall Level
Wall Level
Troop Level
Some Building Levels
Exp. Level (Not sure but I think so)
And maybe a few more things that I'm too lazy to look up.
