I know I'm going to get hate for this but whatever. :D I got my first two levels of the barbarian king using lightning spells up in gold league. Look for bases offering at least 1000 dark elixir. The rest of the levels of my barbarian king I sort of accidentally got, not even looking for dark elixir, by farming using giants and archers.
