Stop the madness
Yep this feature is sorely needed. Every player should have the ability to opt in or out of wars (a "war flag" maybe?)
This is is causing a huge turnover in our clan because we kick/demote people who miss the war. Lots of these are otherwise good/loyal players but we need to do this to set an example and stay competitive/fair.
If SC would simply bring in war opt in/out then the whole problem would be solved. (I bet there are TONS of clans experiencing this problem). Frankly it's diminishing an otherwise fun game.
Can anyone see any downsides to this idea?
Come on, Supercell!

Absolutely required!
This feature needs to be added before people start getting ♥♥♥♥ed off with clan wars and, by extension, the game.
It doesn't need to be so elaborate. Either:
1. Players should have a setting - yes or no - whether they are available for war.
2. Leader maintains the list. Up to players to tell leader if they cannot make a war. Leader can also use this to incentivise players - eg if agreed top 30 available go to war, any players outside top 30 have to climb the rankings to get in.
As it is, as a clan leader I see the arguments non-participation in clan wars causes. Its not fair on the players who can't make a particular war, and not fair on the players who can, but are penalised by the ones who can't.
Edit: how is the word 'h a c k' a swear-word?

War issues we've had
We have had people join us demanding war others not wanting, and then those who joined either dont get anything or quit during prep day. I would say leader or co leaders can specify which people are in war so could be 5v5, but new addition would be you can only get requests from the people in the war.

I like this idea, being able to opt out of war without dropping a ton of trophies or leaving temporarily would be sweet!
There's also the aspect to CWs though that they are a indicator of the clan's cooperation and integrity, members ditching war efforts altogether is not good for the clan's team spirit or atmosphere
Mandatory warring also shows that who's an actually good attacker and as such a valuable member and who's a poor spammer that doesn't deserve to stay so this idea would open doors to detrimental developement in clans

Couldn't agree more.
Clan wars are become destructive to the clan system, our top guys dont want to participate in wars if the middle order cant be relied upon to pull their weight, competition is only fun where there is possibility of success.
We now either have to give up on wars, so miss out on what has become a major part of the game.
Boot real world friends from our clan, because this is no longer a relaxed place for people to hang out and chat anymore.
or just get disenchanted with SC in all levels, and just quit playing, the strength of COC was always its social element (i quit playing hayday and moved to COC for this reason). The right people in the clan makes the game, also you are far more likely to want to compete with a person you know than a random stranger. kicking good friends because they go on holiday and are going to miss a war seems to be beyond reasonable!!
Come on SC, give us a management tool that allows us to keep real friends and family together in a supportive place. not make us choose between friendship bonds and a game.

I like this version of the idea. You're not the first to suggest this, but I like yours the best definitely. You should make it tho to where the default setting, if the leader doesn't change it, is "May opt out".

Only so many opt outs
To revise my earlier post, maybe limit the number of people who can opt out. e.g. If you are a 45 member clan, at least xx have to be available in order to start a war. This keep the clan integrity argument satisfied, and stops 50 member clans starting 5v5 wars with just their strongest 5 members.
Any thoughts?

That would work if people were in the same time zone. Though in some clans the war is started right after the old one and if that person is asleep he is the war like it or not.

Bump
Clan Wars are great but slowly destroying our clan. We have many long term members that we have built a rapport with over time who are slowly leaving because they are not always active enough to take part in wars.
SC any type of opt out would be great. We want to go to war but unless something changes I think we will simply stop warring as it is not fun unless we have a chance to win.

New idea
This idea of an opt out sounds promising, but what if you are in a huge clan and it gets kind of hectic figuring out who is or isn't fighting, what would be handy is to have smaller war groups within the clan
Think of your clan as a country, a country in a world war, you don't fight the battle in one place with one other country, you fight on multiple fronts and divide your army. Now wouldn't it be cool if you had your "elite" army which is your top 5 or 10 guys, and they are all in crystal league and are lvl 80+, they go to war with another group of equal strength, who present more of a challenge. Then you have the co-leaders desperate the rest of the clan into multiple small army's of 15 or so and they have their own little war, at the same time as the other guys, but instead with the 15 guys of equal level in the other clan, this way, say you have 3 seperate warring "battalion" or "legions" in your clan, then you attack another clan with the same amount of "battalions" of equal levels. There would be three seperate battles that make up the war, top guys vs top guys, middle vs middle, and bottom vs bottom. Then say in your clan the top and bottom guys won their battles but the middle one lost. Your clan would win the war because you were victorious on 2 out of 3 fronts.
This is would be organized by having co-leaders be in charge of each battalion. Each member would click on the co leaders name and the "battalion" option would show up, it takes you to a list of players in the battalion, at the top is a button saying "enlist" you click it and you are in the battalion, this way, people aren't forced to war, and the wars become more even
