REVERSE spikes work!!!

Try this. Arrows show where they went, someone tried to attack me and utterly failed.

They go for the nearest "T" with a building behind it. Then after opening all "boxes" (which there actually is none) They then go for the next wall.

With the even spacing of 2 between buildings, my defenses actually picked off alot of the WBs before he got through, he used 16. didnt even break second wall wiz tower took care of it but thats where they tried to go after 1-5.

edit: to clarify: it went red, green, yellow, blue, pink, then 2nd layer.

if this is the case then its Realllly interesting

Were they deployed all at once, a few at a time, or one at a time?

2 at a time ish, kinda in little groups. he tried some giants to distract and that made him able to break through 2, 3, and 4. the distance from the walls saved me, as i hoped.

Yeah i'm hoping I get attacked again... I do have max loot (for the cap) so i hope someone attempts and I can test it again...

Wouldn't you just attack from corners with that reverse spike? The new WB seem to work very well attacking from corners.

I've concluded my qualms isn't with the new AI. I'm sure once we figure out how to use them it'll be fine. My biggest issue is the 2 housing space. The new WB isn't so significantly superior to old AI that it should require double housing.

I'd rather sacrifice and have a smaller blast radius than the doubled housing space.

Nobody has gone for the corners yet, it does seem like a weak point though. I've only been attacked that one time, Ill try to post an image during a replay of another attack.

I think that's a VERY good point - if it was marvellous then 2 spaces = ok as it's just different then less so

however we've had 9 months with the old AI i recon in a few months we will get the best out of this one.

I'm gonna try this design out and see if it works, it would be hilarious after all the wb AI hype, if you could simply invert your spikes ♥♥♥♥

Weird, and indeed interesting... the update said the WBs should go straight forward. -1 for the update if your finding is true. Nice check!

Boxes don't work. It is so easy to "upon" them up and destroy what is in it. The first layer of boxes is gone within seconds.

can someone make a video of this inward spike defence in action?

So have I. And I'll stick with that. At least until I get bored or get wiped out often which hasn't happened so far. Of course I have not been attacked yet post update. We'll see. Ad if that happens I may try this reverse spikes.

Regular spikes, I've attacked some bases with long regular spikes and the WBs go straight through to the wall they are "supposed" to go to. Hence the reason for the upgrade in the first place?

Interesting. I think people need to deploy archers to take out buildings on sides and then deploy wb to tunnel through.

Cool. So a big change how you deploy them. Before the wb was one of the first troops you deployed. Now you want to use them after your first wave of troops.

Just saying its good.

Doesnt work against it, it requires MORE strategy. before u just drop a giant, then drop a WB, then drop another same spot to drill, then just unload, rage spell and done. Now you have to go on each side, destroy other buildings, THEN attempt to drill, I like how they made WBs smarter for the smart player.

WB is where i dropped, X is where it went for. It seems to be random as to where on the inside wall they will go for... As I attacked another spiked base and it went one closer to the wall, but never for the corner, so far anyway.

Ok idk how to space the wall apart but u get the idea. WB is in the middle space where u would logically place a WB to go for the inside wall.

Another thought is to use the new minion and hog rider to clear out adjacent boxes. Then use wb to tunnel through the base. May be cheaper to just archer spam though.

In my test reverse spikes did not draw. Only one drop of four wbs though so my sample is low.

I made a small modification to my last base to include a few of these inner spikes. I am interested in seeing a) whether ir not it consistently works and b) how far apart they can be.

Mine were quite close together. A distance of three squares or one defense between them. But the wbs hit between the inner spikes.

Hmmm, if they aren't biting on that, then this may not be a great solution for most players. Guess I'll just keep mine nice and segmented until all this gets fleshed out a little more. :cool:

Hannibal please figure something out. im having trouble protecting resources :(

Set mine up with inner spikes, spaced 3 apart. WB ignores them until first hole is blown in wall. Then next wall breaker goes for inner spike, rather than next wall layer. I have only one attack so far, so small sample size. Still playing around.

It may still work then. The wbs that attacked me never blew a hole in the first wall. I'm going to set mine up again as a test.

Also, freestanding crosses do not work. I saw someone post that they did.

The only good thing that I can see coming out of the current WB AI fix is that maze plans have been buffed through the roof. They should be essentially unbreakable now.

how so? the WB will just ignore the outer most wall and hit the one behind it. but if the WB is dropped near the end of the outer wall it will only walk into the maze 2-3 squares.

Judging from the videos of wallbreakers taking extremely long routes around wall projections to get at enclosed wall squares, if you set up your maze as single lines only with no Ts you should be able to make them walk a long way. I've just set up a maze on my own base that requires a wb to walk a minimum of 24 spaces before it can encounter a target it will recognize as worth blowing. (Assuming I counted squares accurately.)

i see what you did. i dont understand how it would walk all that way through.

say i drop a WB right on the edge of your patch of land at the SW gold mine but still in line with the LV8 wall. i would imagine he would just walk around that row of walls to the LV9 wall directly behind the LV8 inline with where i dropped him initially.

Wow, I spent about 30 minutes coming up with this earlier. Having no experience with a maze base, it took longer to design something i thought would work. I was hoping, if succesful, this would be my clever secret. Nice to see someone so respected has a similar mindset. I'll try and upload a pic of my base to see if we're on the same page.

If I understand what you're saying, that wall shouldn't trigger him to blow. It doesn't enclose anything. Of course I haven't tested it so all caveats apply.

Yes, he should go deeper. Neither of those maze walls enclose anything. The only walls that should trigger a detonation are those that enclose the inner core. Again, all caveats apply given that the AI fix is new.

Sorry for not embedding but this is what im trying at my base. Finally closed CoC to make myself available for attacks. I'm hoping the breaker will go through the paths in order to get to the corner of the second wall, but im not sure if it will. only time will tell.

I'm pretty sure they'll still target your corners, Hannibal; from what I've gathered, they're attracted to any segment of wall that meets the two criteria of: 1) emplacement in front of a building and 2) incorporation of any joint, not necessarily just t-junctions.

But of course, I'm just as well-versed in their preferences as everyone else, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see for a conclusive idea.

Yeah, it's possible they will. But I've seen them walk around long corners and wall strips to get at enclosed boxes. Right now given that there are no T-junctions on my maze at all and the maze itself is open, my money is on them not detonating there.

Maybe if you moved all of your defenses outside your walls and into one corner of the field, you'd get more attacks...just saying.:p

Maggie, my main account (whose noob base was flashed for all to see a week ago *sob*) is sticking to her floating core. All extra walls from the nerfed spikes have gone to segmenting said inner core - seeing as the new Wallies are tunnel-impaired, it might work out.

Pommie, the low level nooblet however, is going to experiment with said reverse spikes @ a distance of 3-5 squares & see how that goes.
She never has much tanked anyway, so the mistakes won't hurt there as much.

I'm trying mazes along the outside of the base as well. I have a channel around each side of the base with entrances at the top and bottom. Unfortunately behind the entrance is a corner of the core that the WB might deem a target. No one has used WB against me since the update, so I can't give any feedback yet. Malfesto in clan Reddit Juliet if you want to have a look.

As stated 2 posts below, I experimented with a floating core for my main alt's base & had converted its nerfed spikes into inverted spikes as an experiment.

With my resources tanked & left out as bait, it wasn't long before trouble came a-knocking on maggie's door:

My adversary, as you can see, favours an en masse deployment oh his wallies - all 10 (L4) of them were sent in that single tap of his finger.
I cleaned him out of quite a fair bit, so I don't blame him, really...

A few of them - spud knows how many, it was hard to keep count in that mess of intertwining sweaty sumos & running skeletons - have blown an (approximately) 4 tile hole through my main wall.

One can also observe here, that the remaining wallies ran straight ahead towards the next wall (look past the billowing smoke), totally ignoring the inverted spikes within
- kinda like how I have been ignored in the Best Avatar Poll.

I did a few research on my self and no, reverse spikes do NOT work as well :)

My maze still hasn't been attacked, but I saw a few other mazes last night and made a point of attacking them. Wallbeakers will definitely gravitate to T joints on a maze regardless of if those T joints enclose anything. Still waiting to see if open mazes with floating strips draw them.

I have only found segmenting confuses them, once the blow a whole in it, they go a little hay-wire.
