With the extra defenses with lvl 9 TH, yes, you can still get a star with the archer/barb attack, but they have to really have a base that's setup for the taking.
So where I used to see mass balloons, it now seems 11 of the last 12 attacks have been dragon/pekka. I can somewhat stop them without the spells, but with them... I'm toast most times.
So... how about a 2x2 hidden anti-spell tower? Range of 8 or so, that any spells cast that extends into that range are ineffective?
The offense/defense balance of this game shifts so much, it is becoming what you focused on upgrading gets changed every update. 8-(
