I guessed you were complaining of high level guys attacking you and you can't grow... That's the challenge of the game pal. i am lvl.90 TH 9 and i have not used gems, so you can't say that gem is the only path to success in the game.

supercell already added a way to prevent this, loot penalty :)

and no, "you can only be good as you buy gems" isn't true for 2 resons : 1 gems just speed up stuff and 2 you can get 7-15 gems a day by removing obstacles :)

It is possible to max your base without the use of gems - Icarus showed us that (Although... He did boost)

There aretonsof free gems available in the game that you don'tneed to buy, and i am doingjustfinewithoutthem. Sorry for the lack of spacing ipads are really bad for typing.

I did survive and am now TH8 level 62 but I still get attacked by level 70+ with all sorts high end troops.

This game is all about being a bully and taking away some little kids lunch money. Now I pick on little kids if they have any money worth my time.

Its ok, you're going to have to deal with this, just like the rest of us. My suggestion, construct a base that even a high level can't destroy.

You speak to any player over 60 exp and they'll say the same thing, "At the beginning, it's hard to accept higher people attacking you, stealing your loot or trophies." But let's face it, when you attack someone for trophies, you look for someone you know you can beat. When you're looking for loot, you go for someone with loot you can get. That's what this game is about. There's not a player here who doesn't only attack the first base they find in an Attack Search. We all get beaten, lose trophies and loot. It may become a little easier as you get higher to defend in the lower trophy ranges, but that comes with time and patience.
Regarding gemming, Im exp 118 now with a th10 base and I've only paid cash for gems for my 4th and 5th builders huts. It's definitely doable if you put in the time. But if you only play once or twice a week, forget it. Play Candy Crush.
