"War Log"/Clan Icons - when starting war - what does it signify?

We haven't successfully matched a "Clan War" yet and have been dumped out twice (i.e. I had to restart the Clan War), BUT - as it searches I've noticed, when looking at my clan list, that a number of icons are added under the number of each clan member when it is searching... The "Clan War Shield" appears. What does this signify?

At first glance, it would seem that it's part of the matching process and when all are showing the "clan war icon", then it is all set?

if you have a member count of something that isn't divisable by 5, the remainders will be spectators.

This happened to my clan and the "extras" weren't at the bottom of the list, in fact rank #5 and #8 out of the 14 were left out of the war.

That happens if they join too late

can new member participate to clan wars? why do i see a recently joined member has a silver war icon on his numerical order when looking at my clan list? He has a red bar under the icon as well.

when people join after the clan found their match they will become spectators
