I was showing my mom how to do the mystery box maneuver (click thend box, if it's closed, click near it without closing it, and it should appear on the next farm you visit, etc.) and it doesn't work for her half the time. Does anyone else have this problem? I get mystery boxes every single farm I visit... she doesn't.
Are you sure that it's not hiding behind something? It only need 2x2 unoccupied spaces to spawn. That's why it can spawn behind some tall building like your achievement house. Some big tree is able to hide it too. You can spot some hiding box buy looking for its flashing light.
Another thing worth mentioning is that after you...
-'just' open your game
or
-'just' open some previous mystery box on any farm except your own farm.
The mystery box will cease to spawn for a short time. You have to spend a few second on your own farm and it will spawn again.
My mom did all of those things, kept going back to her own farm and doing stuff then going back, and I even double checked the farms she was visiting... to no avail. Funnily enough though, just after I posted this question, she started finding them again (and we'd seriously spent half an hour puzzling over it). It was like magic :D
Temporary glitch?
although I second box hiding. Check by going to Greg's farm. HE Has a limited number of hiding places. On the road, behind the tractor, behind the house, behind the tree to the right of the farmhouse, and in the newly expanded area. Just refresh his avatar instead of going to someone else's farm.
I agree with Tweezle here. They can hide pretty well. I have a friend who has less spots open than Greg and his are always in the road. Tell you mom not to waste time looking so hard, the next farm is just as likely to open as the one she can't find. I also find that the boxes are easier to find on low level farms because they don't have as many trees to hide them.Quote:

But we tried all those things - Greg's farm where we know all the hiding places, low level farms, everything right after she'd gone to her own farm and done something that produced xp. Looked for sparks flying behind every building and tree, and there was nothing anywhere. Oh well - the issue resolved itself :) We think it may have been a glitch - gc keeps kicking her out and she did a complete shut down, after which both gc and mystery boxes started working again.
