Funneling? You should try Tunneling

So, I'm basically a newbie to this game, just started playing a week ago and yes, I got hooked. And while going through the forum, I realised funneling is quite popular here. I tried it, but due to limitations in the number of walls I could build as a newbie (I'm TH4 by the way), I couldn't really get to "funnel" my village appropriately. So, I improvised, and came up with TUNNELING..

As the name suggests, you build your village like a tunnel...well, kind of. Its more like a spiral tunnel. And yes, it works very well, Ive only been raided successfully twice out of 15 attempts ...One with an army of almost 100, and the other from someone who managed to get his clan members to donate hog riders, but still at a heavy loss on the attacker. Otherwise, my village has been unraidable.. Here's what it looks like

If you've noticed, there's a direct and easy entrance troops can easily go through, but they'll have to get past ALL of my defence to get a chance to loot. Thats no easy task. Also notice the walls around the enterance are the weakest walls (light green lines) as there's no advantage in fortifying them.
However, its easy to notice that if the wall indicated by that red line is breached, there's easy access to all the loot, that's also why it has the strongest walls, and is within range of all oof my defences.
Every other part has relatively stable walls, as breaching them wont do much good.

The advantage of this tactic is that, its relatively easy to build, as you dont have to fortify all your walls, which is very important for a newbie in the game, and yet its still very effective.
The major disadvantage however, which I noticed from the attacks is that deploying lots of goblins with some other troops as distraction can do the most damage, as they basically run fast through the "tunnel" to steal loot, while your defence deals with the other troops...

So, what do you think?

I forgot to add, I still think funneling is better in the long run, especially as you advance in the game and start facing more powerful troops. I just think its a cheaper alternative that can be very useful to beginners in the game

Very nice, this does exist, it goes to the style of a labyrinth base, but at early stages, the thing is, at your level, people will always beat you, becaus ematchmaking is based on trophies, so there will alays be people who beat you easily, funneling works by trap placement, nice throwing this out here anyways!

At th4, the chances of you winning are really, really hard due the lots of factors in the game, wallbreakers going in from the otherside to expose your town hall, underdeveloped defenses, th5 and 6's attacking you... the list is endless.

I would defintiely get your walls up and keep them maxed the the th level your at and progress to the next th when youve maxed the previous town hall :)

That's why the south has the strongest walls... In fact, it's the only part I really put effort into fortifying

As a matter of fact, I rarely get beaten when I'm being attacked. Except in rare cases, like when I was attacked by hog riders.. My defence is no match for hog riders

I would put at least one of your spring traps outside the wall in front of the mortar. A giant attack placed outside the mortar wall could take out the mortar if they don't go all the way over to the archer tower first and make everything pretty easy for a TH 5 hitting you.

Does the giant AI allow for it to take the mortar out if placed outside the mortar (by going thru the walls) or would they all go heading to the archer tower? If they head to the AT then stick with what you have.

I think it is a NICE design though especially for a TH 4 where things are limited. Great effort especially for someone only playing a week! :cool::D

I must agree, while this might work at lower lvl gameplay, since they dont have wall breakers or they have low lvl ones, but at higher lvl gameplay, this design is useless.

That's not a base design for beginners in any way... Great points I must say, but not for beginners. Beginners barely have walls and don't get attacked by level 5 archers often, they don't need air defences because it's not a problem, I've never been attacked by air, at least not yet..
U don't have enough walls to afford to put my resources in different compartments...

If you wanted to do something for beginners, how about giving us the best base design when you don't have walls? Or at least, when you have just 50 walls.

I did point out that this is not my preferred choice, but it's the best I could come up with for my resources. If I had more resources, I'd rather adopt the funneling design..

Giants, like barbarians follow the path of least resistance, so, they usually just go straight to the AT via the tunnel entrance .. This design was sort of designed specifically for giants and barbarians

As for the spring trap, I totally agree with you... Will do that now, thanks

giants and barbarians have totally different pathing.

Barbarians do infact go for the path of least resistance and attack anything thats nearby.

Giants aim for defenses and not until they are all destroyd do they attack anything else. They will go for the path of least resistance but a wall dosnt simply block them it adds a certain number of spaces to the calculated route.

Giants would bash down that wall rather then go around,

Thanks for the info, I did notice that on one particular attack, a Giant tried to bash the wall, my mortar and arch tower dealt with it.

Wonder why no one talks about goblins, for this design, they've caused more damage to my base than giants. They are very fast and when released in large numbers, they go straight for the wall, especially when my defence is distracted by other troops.

The truth is, the simplest way to break my defence is to attack the arch tower at the entrance of the tunnel, then send a wall breaker to attack the wall just adjacent to it, and gain easy access to the loot... Out of my 20 or so attackers, only one actually tried that. Apparently, most of you didn't think of that too, you see the tunnel as more of a trap, so you'd rather avoid it...

Well, at your TH level, base design doesn't matter much. On the other hand, learning how traps work and exploiting the troops' ai to your advantage as early as possible like you did is wise thinking. Good job ! Hope you fare far and well in this game.

Tunneling? When you make a big maze thing around your base? I was gonna try that but I forgot and never got to it. will have to try that for TH9

I think once you begin leveling higher, and getting your town hall up you will realize this method isn't as powerful as you are experiencing it to be now. As others have stated the south side of your base grabs my attention immediately.. I'd send a few giants, and archers to blow out that mortar immediately, and then send some archers to take out that archer tower.. you should experiment other base layouts!

I wonder why people waste their hogs on you, I could beat you with just barbarians, don't need more than 50, so I think yhose attacks were big fails, but nice for you ofc

oh how wrong you are... HAHA. as a noob i always raided with barch (barbarians and archers) with wall breakers and i still casually play sometimes on my lv25 account (lv3 barb/arch). i would DESTROY your base, so might not want to call it "unraidable".

as you mature as a clasher youll learn. :)

Thanks.... I am very aware it won't work as u advance in the game... And like I said, I only improvised because I didn't have enough walls to funnel adequately. And I did make some adjustments, I've moved the mortar backwards, so it's not that close to the wall. I've had 600+ trophies from solely just defending.

I'm dumping this base design when I get to the TH5, I just see it as very effective and cheap to build. Ideal for a starter

I might have used this if I was TH4, good idea
