I have a lvl 8 TH and was a dummy and have never thought to max defenses before going up. Now I'm playing catch-up. What's the best/fastest troops for farming? My highest level troops are giants and archers at lvl 5. Are they my best bet?

ABSOLUTELY!
Giants and archers are a farmer's best friend imo. I use a giant-healer army and it works wonders in high silver I/low gold III. This is my army that i use with max troops for town hall 8:
2 level 3 healers,
16 level 5 giants,
40 level 5 archers,
6 level 5 wall breakers,
20 level 5 goblins,
10 level 4 minions.
This adds up to 200 army space. Imo, this army is best used around 1400 trophies, and you should only use the minions and goblins if you want to. I find that a few goblins are good if I'm loosing a battle and need a quick team to steal as many resources as possible. The ten minions is almost a must, but you could substitute them for more giants/archers. I like to have a few minions in my army just because they are great in a pinch. If i need to take out an extra building, then they can do it quickly and possibly do it without being harmed because they fly. They can also be used for extra firepower in a group. Their flying is the real reason they are useful because walls don't affect them and they cannot be targeted by some defenses. If these two are low levels then you can leave them out, but if they are at least level 3, then i would suggest including them if you have the space. Hope this helps! :D
yup. archer giant is fine. those 2 troops is a perfectly viable farming strat. Cook up like 8 to 10 giants and rest archers. use giants as a meat shield. Upgrade barbarians next and you'r good. For DE troops upgrade minions as priority.
The above strat is fine but for farming i wouldnt bother with healers. Try to take out collector bases and storages that are behind 1 set of walls.
Thanks guys!
People swear by this Giant/Healer strategy but if you're anything like me, your healer will be a moron and go and heal freaking archers, the giants will split off in 20 directions, and your archers will pile up and get mowed down by a wizard tower that is getting hit by two giants. Not to mention way too high of a training time and cost for me.
BAG is my favorite farming strategy and it never fails to get me tons of loot. x67 Archers, x67 Barbarians, x66 Goblins and go to town on bases that can be cored easily or collectors that are full, and pull off the 50% victory to keep those trophies up. BAM is also an option if you prefer Minions over Goblins, but that's up to you. Basically the same strategy except you have to watch for Air Defense and such, as well as spend Dark Elixir.
Good luck!
BAM also lets you use 6 barracks and has a significantly lower training time. As well as even lower elixir cost so it's great if you'r trying to get elixir for troop upgrades.
I wouldnt use healers for farming unless maybe you'r boosting the rax. But for pushing it is an awesome strat. just have to deploy them correctly.
If you are looking to farm storages, a more powerful army is what you need. If you want to grab as many resources as you can, as fast as you can, then you really can't beat goblins. They only have one thing in mind: Grab resources!!
Find a base with goodies in collectors and mines and drop about five goblins off at each one. They won't be distracted by builders huts and they don't care if a mortar is raining death on their heads.
I use a variety of numbers, but normally my farming complement is 70% archers, 15% barbs, 5% goblin and 5% giants.
Archers: Ranged attack is perfect for almost anything, plus if you have level 4 or 5 archers they can take damage.
Barbs: I use them as meat shields for my archers and goblins.
Goblins: I use these in certain areas where I went fast troop that can grab quick loot.
Giants: 100% meat shields that take the attention away from my archers and goblins.
Barch.
Farming in Gold 2 and get about 300k pet raid, mostly more than 50%.
One of the quickest army compositions to train. Very flexible. (I usually add 4 wall breakers as backup.)
With BAM, I usually fill my gold storages (6M) in 6-8 hours.
Good luck!
