I am new to CoC. I mean very new, how do you acquire gems beside via purchasing?
Achievements and removing obstacles such as trees, stones, bushes etc.
If you get the "Sweet Victory" Achievement you will get 450 gems. This enables you to get your 3rd builder. Achievements can pay out anywhere from 10-450+ gems. Removing obstacles will get you anywhere from 0-7 gems.Quote:

I went for the sweet victory achievement, which got my third builder, and then worked toward other smaller achievements to use for boosting my barracks or anything of that sort. Also, I clear all but one obstacle in my village, wait for a bunch more to regrow, then do the same thing. This helps you acquire short bursts of gems that you can also use for boosting buildings, or you can save up for another builder hut. Remember, more builder huts mean more power.
