I as well, strongly believe that clan wars is coming in the next update(or maybe the one after). Supercell has already confirmed that they're working on it, and between the evidence you've provided here and the little tiny hints forum mods have been(possibly accidentally) dropping, so it's highly likely we'll see it soon ^.^

Another argument for clan wars: If the next update wouldn't be clan wars, supercell would probably try to stop this hyping with the crossed sword symbol, since otherwise the next update will be quite a disappointment to most.

Pham daddy stated previously that that picture was in the chalkboard in the kitchen. It could be that the crossed swords symbol is just the symbol of the developers

My hunch is that they will succeed in somehow combining clan wars with the quest system. It might be far fetched, but Steve mentioned in a thread where there was a choice in between both of them where he said "Why not both?". I might be going a bit too far here (wishfull thinking I guess) but this also supports your statement of clan wars primarily focussing on farmers! In any event, I can't wait for clan wars!
