Good point! If raiding doesn't pay out as much at town hall 9.. It makes sense... Plus you need all that elixir to fill your xbows too....

I wouldn't worry about it too much.
If the trophy range you are at, allows you to battle with barbs, archers, giants, gobs and/or wallbreakers, then you can continue to do this, and not worry about the barracks.
Yes you do get the advantage of being able to queue additional units, and yes, it's easier to do it when you are lower levels in terms of easier raiding profits.
But unless you can do without the builder that it ties up for the duration of the upgrade and have spare elixir to do so... I'd concentrate on other things.
When the TH upgrade is done, then the first things to work on would be, the extra defences and the lab. So any excess elixir you have, will soon disappear into the lab anyway.
I got all my barracks at level 7 bar 1 at level 10. Not planning on upgrading them anytime soon.
MY buddy in my second clan, Fight club has them all to 9. Hes a th 7 too. Names R2mick
My barracks were the first thing I concentrated on maxing. I just got to TH9 last week, but my barracks were all lvl10 back in mid December. I think maxing them is a must and makes your life so much easier when they are done.

pros:
1. at TH7, you will never have it so good in terms of raiding/loot again. elixir is like rain (if you live somewhere where it rains a lot).
2. bigger barracks allow for longer queues, though 55 vs 60 troops probably doesn't make a difference
3. dragons are actually useful for higher trophy raids
cons:
1. playing with three barracks, while one upgrades, is painful. but you'll have to do it someday, and you'll likely not have so much elixir to spare ever again.
2. puts off TH8 and lvl 5 troops that much longer
- i upgraded all my barracks at TH7 and i have no regrets. :D
