This is my experience,
In Masters III - infernos really aren't that big a problem. This is because players don't necessarily cover their storages with multi-target infernos. I simply attack around the edges and can make do with 16 loons, minions, and 1 lightening spell (220 camp space). Throw in a lvl 15 or better AQ and I can get to 2718 while push farming. Also fully maxed Th10 base with single target infernos is till a huge challenge
Below Masters III (in particular Crystal II and below) they are a huge problem. Why? Well most Th10 in these ranges are farming and they do use there infernos to provide cover fire for their storages. This is only compounded by the fact that players in these ranges are also farming (unlike Masters III) and are using combinations where an elixir profit is attainable. If you come across a preemie Th10 at the loot cap for everything with duel maxed infernos covering all of their storages with otherwise Th7-8 defenses - there are still not worth the cost to raid. Sure up in Masters III they'd get spanked for relying sole on 2 towers but below that all you need to do is throw that TH outside, place your storages close to your IT and BOOM your an impractical target to 95% of the players. (since most of these players aren't even all that concerned if they make it to 50% if they can get good loot)
Now is it smart to rush ahead to get these powerful defensive structures? To a point yes. You absolutely must max your splash and troop upgrades first. Then move up in the trophy ranges so you can collect on that huge loot bonus (low Masters). You'll loss plenty for sure, but throw that TH outside and you could make a good argument for simply maxing those puppies.
Its been suggested tying the inferno's power to trophy level. I think this is not a bad idea. I feel once you hit Masters III there power is justified but if you are in Gold I they are waaaay to powerful.
