[DISCUSSION] TRAPS: Do you like them, use them, upgrade them?

OK, seeing as the update is still a million miles away :D and every other thread is talking about poor loot or nexting or lightning on DE I thought I'd try a fresher topic for some discussion.

I change my style of play often to mix up the game and keep my enjoyment. Sometimes I'm down in Crystal, sometimes Masters and currently trying to hold on to Champions while farming Gold + DE (mainly for the win bonus).

One thing I've noticed is that even once you reach Masters level you can pretty much expect a big attack on your base.

Until now I've been upgrading my traps like any other item and have been hitting "Re-arm All" as soon as I get back to my base. However I'm now starting to question this and wondered what you all do and how you use them?

OK, I'm in Champs now but the same would probably occur if I was in high Crystal or Masters. Essentially I'm trying to protect resources (Gold + DE) and my base does this very well however once I take into consideration the price to re-arm the traps were they actually worth it?

See below image (and consider my traps are not even maxed!). This was after a normal attack (full army / both heroes / 4 or 5 spells). I honestly think I would have been better off NOT re-arming the traps and seeing if they could have got through to 2 more gold storages. Probably not having watched the replay back.

Also, another problem I have with the bombs is that they explode far too slowly. See the below image at the top. Raged Wall Breakers can blow outside, run through the giant bomb and blow the next wall even before the bomb has gone off. Complete waste of 40k there. I keep them there because occasionally I get a funnelling of Wizards and they hang around long enough for the bomb to wake up.

What I'm trying to say is: "I'm literally not getting my BANG for my BUCK".

I'm going to experiment with NOT re-arming my traps soon to see if it makes much difference.

I've also noticed some high level farmers just stick all there exploded traps in one corner of their base and forget about them.

They are key to my base design so i use them constantly as they get to middle all storages are gone but if traps save it then they get nothing so i believe that it is worth it

Giant bombs too. Small bombs are just ♥♥♥♥.

I think, regardless of the league in which you farm the cost of the upgrades are too high. Not to mention the re-arm cost.

Im not sure of the effectiveness of Ground Traps at Champs league so will not comment, however I imagine that Air Mines/Bombs can be quite effective with the number of Lonnies we have nowadays.

This is a different matter for lower down farming where Barch/BAM are more frequent and unless you very strong defensively I think that these would actually pay for themselves.... unless of course people are like me and enjoy setting off everyones bombs just for the extra annoyance of the Defending player.

I only have 1 Giant Bomb Maxed the rest are all level 3, but this matter non as I never reset them anyway.

I wish i could sell all of mine except a few spring traps.

I'm not upgrading traps to max level yet. I need to work on buildings and walls then I can get to my traps when I can. When you're farming you don't really need traps. I don't expect to trophy push till the clan trophy push I will assign for my clan which is about three months away. That's a lot of farming to do, and I have a lot of time to farm traps. Traps may be expensive to re-arm but worth it. My base could be confusing for where my trap placement is, not so much about teslas. Usually my enemies fall for my traps, and my teslas are in a good place where they can get the bet of the enemies. If you don't like the re-arm cost then don't re-arm, might be waste of your gold.

Ive just upgraded my spring traps to make them springier.

I am not sure if they are usefull enough too. I am farming at master 1 and I lose more from rearming my traps then that they take from my storages. I think I will put them in a corner soon too.

I put 3 small bombs together. They are usefull that way and not that expensive

I did upgrade all the small bombs because they're cheap an look a lot better. Giant bombs are too much. Wish I could sell or store those. I've put all 6 bombs together, gives a nice little kick.

You'd be surprised, 95% of attacks that I've seen are all on land. In my base I even keep X-Bows down.

In high Masters / Champs all are the same (3 x Golem, 20 x Wall breakers, 15 to 20 Wizards and some barbs for luring). Air Traps very rarely get blown unless they follow-up with a few minions.

Small bombs wouldn't even deflect a Golem fart.
Giant bombs are too slow seeing as everyone uses Rage.
Spring Traps can catch the odd Wall Breaker or Wizard but everyone spams so doesn't catch them all. It would be better to have a floor trap that when troops have been deployed will all get caught in there, not just the first ones to be sprung.

Like I said, I'm going to experiment with not re-arming some traps.

Yeah the cost of trap getting higher but not all trap considered helpful like bomb

I've been in high Crystal I and Masters III for a while now. My giant bombs are lvl 3 (except my new one), my air mines are lvl 4 (again except for the new one), left my seeking air mines alone, and maxed bombs.

My logic

Big bombs are pretty useful against hogs. At Th9 I doubled them up and they packed a punch - try it wasn't quite enough to deflect a heal but still useful. They also do pretty well against giants. Both pretty common in the attacks I see

Regular bombs - figured what the heck, there better and still cheap. I pair these up or group them with big bombs, that way they can either take out an archer/goblin or add a little extra pop to a big bomb

Air Mines - loons are fairly common. A few of these can be pretty painful. I spread them out so as to not waste them. In January I had enough raids ruined by a cluster of air mines not to question there cost

Seeking Air Mines - right now, a waste to upgrade. Dragons are rare to see right now and that is the only unit where upgrading this trap makes a difference. They KO pretty much anything else at lvl 1


Costs for me - In my old Labyrinth design mass hog attacks where the only thing that tended to set off every bloody trap. In this scenario it was generally worth it usually prevented my attacker from winning massive amounts of loot (still heavy losses on my part, but not a big win on their end)

As a Th10 I just switched to a new layout. Most of my traps are imbedded due to the addition of infernos to my defenses. I've only had a few full out attacks, but they have not been setting off very many traps so far.



Trap upgrades are overpriced but I made time for them at the end of my Th9 experience. They are very helpful

The biggest issue is the cost, as your screenshot points out over 150k gold to re-arm them, that is a ♥♥♥♥ing joke.

As if getting 3 starred and losing 300,000 odd loot isn't bad enough.

Traps are a great part of the game, they mean if you get hit 2-3 times in a row you are more likely to finally lose a battle; which is a great concept alongside x-bow & inferno reloading. And also CC re-filling.

But seriously SuperCell, reduce the cost; they really should only be about half the current price.

It one of many examples as to why defence sucks, you are better off riding shields when possible and staying online as long as possible as opposed to actually defending...

Playing proper defence only screws you over big time in this game.

If you put small bombs in an area that wizards will travel they make a huge difference. Like wizards normally attack from left to right or right to left like all troops. So I have bombs next to a couple buildings which are right next to each other.

They do a lot of damage on those whizzes.

Yes, you're right. I think everything depends on the situation, traps are like village layouts or troops, they won't win all the time but used and placed wisely, they are really useful.

In gold 3 traps save me. They fling giants, blow up healers, stop hordes of archers and barbians, and can take a L3 dragon all the way to red

I think the way this game is designed almost makes it so that defense can't do more than make the difference between 1, 2, and 3 stars.

I pushed recently with the boosting season. Having both heros and at least 2-3 spells every battle made winning fairly simple. How that I can't do that I've went from 2708 to being in danger of losing my little black badge (2510, right now). I win roughly 4-7 trophies per battle and if I lose I can lose 20-30 easy. This can be 5-6 battles worth of wins, which is roughly 2.5-3+ hours of raiding (depending on my exact compositions). In essence I can lose a whole days worth of trophy hunting to one loss

Then, as you point out, on the flip side there is very little incentive for me to defend my TH. If I win but do not get a shield I am open to more attacks. Sure if I win several battles in a row I net a nice little sum of trophies, but at a cost that can be ridiculous.

I wish i could sell all my big bombs or remove them from the rearm all...

Too many times, my bombs go off on ONE troop.... Or they go off on giants and it does like no damage :p

Maybe its just not good placement...

I think one has to consider the use for the traps. Spring and giants have a lot of kill potential. Place them accordingly for hog attacks giants etc. everyone knows the normal bombs don't have much kill potential. I place them as singles near wizard towers for their knock back. It gives the wizards and mortars enough time to adjust their shot accordingly.

I do use most of the trap. I upgrade all except Giants Bomb. Max is lvl 2. I wouldn't spend more gold on lvl 3.

Save you from what? Your in gold 3 so obviously don't care about cups. It is very unlikely they will save a storage every raid but even if they did and you were always over the limit for gold that is 50-100k gold saved depending on your th level for a cost of 80-120k gold. They may be useful if you only care about de and don't care about gold but that won't be applicable to you if you are in gold 3.

I use my all of my traps except for my giant bombs for 3 reasons:

1. I rarely get hit by a big attack so i have no use for them
2. Giant bombs rarely do anything besides take out one troop and cost wayyyyy to much for the work they do

I like 'em, use 'em, and upgrade 'em.

That being said, if I'm in a trophy range where I'm getting consistently getting beat, then I don't bother re-arming them because they're just a money sink.

stitch why dont you double giant bomb? surely thatd put a dent into golems?

I use them and upgrade them...although mostly so I can do something during my TH upgrade...:rolleyes: They are sort of useful...

I upgraded all of mine (maxed for TH9) and rearm them too
I am unsure if I will be upgrading them when I am a TH10 though
I would upgrade srping traps in a heartbeat if that was possible

Personal choice, but I like to see how my defense performs when I am raided and the bombs are a key part of that defense.

(Most times I just get a TH snipe so it's not often an expensive exercise anyway)

I have level 3 giant bombs and air bombs and level 4 bombs- basically just the cheaper upgrades and the giant bombs.
At my low level with my inventive base design, my giant bombs function very well. My seeking air mines are rarely set off and these two together make the major cost.
But at a high level that's not true.
The noobs just have all of their troops blown up by my giant bomb:)
I think at champs league for pushing i would rearm them as they sometimes make the difference for a 50%. But if farming then I'd leave them.

Best spot to place lvl 5 bombs?

I like putting them next to my gold storages, but the 35 damage is pretty weak IMO.

I max them and use them inside to protect my Xbows and Teslas. Most defences I don't have to reload them, TH snipers and bad attacks, so they only cost me when I really need them. I love to see hogs fly or explode from two giants bombs.

Small bombs has pulled through for me many times because WBs run right on them and explode. Depending how your base works with unit AI and where you place your traps is on you, not the traps.

As a th10 farmer I use traps. I hate the re arm cost, but I try to make it so only all out attacks spring traps and they are not sprung with just a townhall snipe. spring traps are great for defense. Effective and cheap enough so that if they are not effective I am not out much.

As an attacker clan castle troops and traps can make the difference between getting the storage raid or not. I use giants, so I hate spring traps. Seeking air mines kick my tail too as I use a healer or two as well. I miss when seeking air mines were dark elixer.
