Now, I know farmers do this a lot and only protect their resources. I'm asking this though - besides getting a free shield, what is the purpose of leaving it out in the open? Does a shield really matter if they're just going to start farming again anyway?

It doesnt matter at all if you are going to be coming right back on, it only matters when you are going to bed or wont be playing for several hours.

also, they cant "bleed you out" by only getting 39% or less before leaving. thus not granting you a shield, (but still taking your resource) leaving you very vulnerable to other attackers. if you have traps set and the first guy triggers them, but does not get the 40%...and you dont get on before the next few attackers get your base..then your base is less then optimal for attackers after the traps have been triggered/disabled. 3) it helps to lower your trophy count so you stay in the optimal range more often. without having to mass dump trophs.
if I have a lot of time, Ill log off and troph chasers will bust my TH, so I get lower troph, and it only cost me the 1k G/E..and I can stay 'near' my farming range with little hassle.
4) TH takes a lot of walls to protect, walls that could be used to protect your more important Storages, Mortars, WTs and maybe some high lvl collectors
5) the Trophy hunting clowns get so bent out of shape over it.. it makes me laugh so much, quit whining and enjoy the dang fun this game has to offer!
