I have a boat due in about 10 minutes that will need soybeans, plain popcorn, and pumpkin pies. I think I may have gone a little over-board (pun intended) with getting ready. I have 102 soybeans, 92 plain pop corns, and 12 pumpkin pies. My coin balance is quite low, and so I'm sure selling off my excess products will help it a little.
The way I look at it is this: you might be a tiny bit overboard, but you'll be all the more prepared if you get back to back boats requiring one of those items, which can happen. My daughter and I have been slammed with boats requiring seafood pizzas, about 5 boats between us these past couple of days. So even though we started with a lot of them, it was helpful to have several left over.
I used to "collect" popcorn and can remember the days when I had 92 at once. Was a happy camper then. I don't have room for that many anymore. :)
There is no over prepping! There is only prepping for orders yet to come! :D

I've done that. I usually buy the stuff for incoming boat orders if I see it in the DD. So this one time I was buying chocolate popcorn whenever I saw it.
The boat arrived, and it wanted something like 12. I had 120. Got a little carried away, I guess.
The worst for me was after I finished Turbo Trucker III. I had stocked up on 10 of (almost) everything to prepare. And ended up with soooo much left over. And much of it wasn't particularly interesting, as far as selling in my RSS goes. Took me days to get rid of it all.
Overprepping....one reason why if you are my neighbor and I buy a bunch of stuff from your RSS, then you come to mine in a few minutes and see those same items in mine... Yes, I am a chronic overprepper, lol.
Some boat orders ask for HUGE amounts of stuff and sometimes not so much. Yesterday I had FOUR crates wanting well over 67 (can't remember exactly) wheat each. Have also had some like that with soy.
It turns out that my large stock of items was a good idea. There were only a few extras of each.
I just got my boat this morning and I'm waiting for my 4th order now. Carrots, eggs, and white sugar is what I need. Last order I need about 100 corn... There is definitely no 'over prepping'. lol
as was mentioned before there is a thread to check how many items a boat will roughly require.
depending on the items one could choose to simply go *bezerk* in any shop they see, or wait for the boat to come and work from there. lowest items like bread and popcorn or premiums can normally be sold away easily if you choose to cast away the leftovers.
on the other side a boat might require longer to sell items like blue sweaters. for items like these that are often in high supply yet low in demand i usually wait for my ship to come in and buy up whatever i lack. i simply dont have the free barn place to stack these nor the will to take forever selling these off/waiting for the next boat.
my last tactic for these *unwanted* barn occupants: trucking. depending on your method to choose which truck to do (and i am quite selective :P), i often find an order that asks a few *undesireables* or a combination of these. currently i have an order pinned for 2 blue sweaters and some crops, and an order asking for chilli popcorn. since i make these items overnight i will complete these when i wake up and wont have to store/sell these. as mentioned before should a boat ask for these i will raid the DD for some additional items as (like eggs, eggs and bacon etc) my DD gets so many sell offers of these i dont even bother keeping one in my barn, let alone a full boat order.
I bought about 12 red berry cakes for my boat, figuring I'd get 2 - 3 per crate since they only take an hour
...NOPE! I only needed 4, 1 per crate!
Meanwhile, doesn't carrot cake crates take 2 - 3? and it's a half hour longer? Silly!

carrot cakes are easily sold in DD, so you can a bit overboard in prepping that, as for cherry cakes i often find these in either neighbour shops or DD adds. (carrot cake both requires butter and brown sugar making it desireable for higher levels who dont have the dairy and/or sugar to spare, while cherry cake only takes items that are readily available.
I don't keep chocolate popcorn and chili popcorn on hand. So when I had a boat for chocolate popcorn I went to the DD. Don't remember how many I ended up with but sooooo over did it. I had 4 boats asking for it though out of about 6 so was glad that I had so many
