There's a knack to it. Eventually you'll be able to recognize the event fish by the way the small and large circles look (the ones that appear on the water surface when a fish is hooked).
The event fish have sort of medium sized inner circles. If the inner circle is so small it's about the same size as the fish...it's not an event fish. The inner circle for an event fish is a little larger than that. But only a little. A big inner circle is not an event fish, either.
The large outer circle contracts more slowly around event fish, so if you notice that, keep the fish.
If it's not a fish you want, drop it and let it go. You won't lose your lure, and will be able to try again right away.
