First Attempt at a TH9 Anti-Hog... tips?

Hello Supercell Forums! I'm a pretty fresh TH9 and due to the great loots in the 1850-1950 range the rate of getting attacked by the horrible piggies of destruction has inevitably increased.. SO I decided to try and make my own Anti-Hog trophy base to combat this (I'll be starting a trophy push soon). So, here it is..

I think the trap placement needs a bit of work, but other than that I think it looks okay. Clearly it would be much more effective if the defences were of a higher level, and yes, I am a bit of a symmetry freak :rolleyes:

So, does anyone have any constructive criticisms / tips? It'd be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Your Air defense is very exposed, but there's not much you can do about it. Has it been tested at all? I don't think the AI would path through those giant bombs.

I agree that this is a problem, unfortunately when you make a base to combat one sort of troop it becomes vulnerable in other departments. Hopefully the SAMs next to each air defence are enough to ruin a giant-healer user's day and the centralized air bombs are enough to limit the damage of a balloon-minion army

Has not been tested as of yet as I only just made it. I'm not quite sure about the giant bombs either, but I couldn't find another place to put them.. haha. I think the traps are the main thing that need tinkering with, if anyone has any ideas on better places for them then please let me know :)

Looks good, but i have to agree that this base will get 3-starred pretty easy by a balloonion attack. Air bombs alone are absolutely not capable of limiting the damage of a balloonion attack :)

Yeah, you're right. I'm not sure on what configuration I should have xbows on, against hogs I need them to be in the line of fire for as long as possible, and when set to ground+air the range just stops on the outside of the outermost defences, so hogs would go by un-hurt. Thoughts?

To be really anti hog you would have them on ground but since your ad is exposed you might want to keep them on air.

Does anyone have any ideas on better trap placement? Mainly the useless mini-bombs and the double giant-bomb tactic. I think the spring traps are in good places.

regarding the pairs of giant bombs, I can GUARANTEE you that hogs will not follow the path you want them to follow. This is because the air defense and the wiz tower are closer than those archer towers on the other side of those giant bombs, since hogs ignore walls. However, giants will follow your desired trap path, so long as wall breakers do not breach the wall to the ADs and WTs first.

So yes, you'll definitely need to play with your trap placement.

When making anti-hog bases, people often underestimate the distance required between the outer layer defensive structures and the core, and the fact that you need a THICK, buffer layer of non-defensive units (like storages/collectors/mines/AQ/BK/barracks/etc.) to ensure hogs don't jump into the core. I think after you see some attacks against you, you will see the holes in your base where hogs won't follow around the entire outer layer as you want them to.

The north and south corners of defensive units look like they'll be the problem areas.

Trial and error will help you make tweaks to your base, so pay attention to your replays!

regarding trap placement:

- put small bombs in groups of at least 2-3 so that they can do more devastating damage.
- consider putting spring traps IN BETWEEN your defensive outer layer units, so that when hogs jump from one unit to the next one beside it, they get sprung. The problem with your current setup is that once the enemies breach your base from one corner/side, the rest of the spring traps outside the base on the other side likely won't ever get triggered during that attack anymore.
- giant bombs......... you just need to ensure that the next closest defensive unit is on the other side of where you the two bombs will be. This is hard to achieve when you put two giant bombs side-by-side. Consider putting one on top of the other; this way you only have a two space gap to deal with, instead of a four space gap.

Firstly, great posts! Lots of good constructive criticisms I can work with, thanks. Secondly, would you able to make a clash of clans builder or something to illustrate how I could re-arrange the springs? That would help a lot, as I need to move around the defences and I'm not sure where to put everything. Good shout on the giant bombs, unsure of where to place them though also. Thanks again

The best example I could provide you is peabak's anti-hog base here:

He has done EXTENSIVE EXTENSIVE testing and tweaking to make an extremely powerful anti-hog base. Have a look and you will quickly learn what a great anti-hog base should look like.

Compare it to Cloud Whiskey's awesome base, which is NOT an anti-hog base, just for reference of how two completely different designs can be effective in their own ways:

I'm using a modified version of peabak's Ringus base (still designed by peabak):

It is just about the most balanced base I've ever tried, almost a jack of all trades in terms of defending well against the most different attack armies out there (except for gowiwi or gowipe, since my trophy range is only in gold 1 or crystal 3, so not many of those types of high level attacks).

This is mine, but I do tweak it always...in Crystals, you will win a few defenses, in Masters...well maybe 1 win out of 3 defenses

Mostly i get defeated 1 star in Master, but if the Player is good...can 3 star my base..but rarely happens

Anyway, for newbies, Ringus layout is a good starter...
