In gold I, you would probably find a good amount of DE and the bases would be easier to raid (compared to crystal III).
In gold II, DE is rather low and for those bases that have around 500 or more are usually better protected.
not sure about th9 but i got my barb king in under 2 weeks using barch +3 lightning spells at 1250 trophies
Anyone who tells a TH9 to zap to farm DE is clueless. The giant wiz (healer) at high gold-low/mid crystal is pretty good advice, but for the big DE hauls I'd say C2-M2 balloonions (whatever you can maintain, the higher the better). Regardless of the number of minions you use you will still profit heavily with this strategy, and you can always vary the balloon/minion ratio depending on DE needs and building time preferences.
The single downside with this army is that it is pretty spell reliant (increasingly so when moving further up), so in order to get as much as possible out of this you may want to boost your SF to get those spells out faster. During the X-mas boost I was shooting for a balance between gold and DE, gaining anywhere from 30-50k DE per day. Reading Unity_Sharps DE farming guide, it seems the real pros can farm some 70-90k DE per day (don't quote me on this as I'm not 100% sure of the numbers, long since I read it), which is quite insane! Since then I've done some bursts of pure DE-focused farming, with around 40k / day with one rax boosted, and consistently 20-30k / day without rax boost, raiding casually (around 40-56 min build time, depending on spell usage and loon:min ratio). From what I've seen from some forumites (ZACHuva, Goodguy, Unity Sharp) M2-M1 loonions is supposedly even more profitable, because more people have their storages more exposed up there.
Finally, BArch and BAM in the upper gold / low crystal leagues can net you some surprising DE amounts - not really comparable to what you get in high crystal - low/mid master, but still quite nice. Gold is far easier to come by there, as well, so stay there if you want a nice mix of gold/DE.
TL;DR: Zap if you want easy and failsafe DE and are content with level 5 heroes at TH10. If you want higher heroes, you probably should hang around in high gold - low/mid crystal and either do a giant wiz-based army or BArch/BAM, or if you really want to rake in the big DE numbers go play around with your balloonions up in high crystal/low+ master.

Well I am at crystal 3 and the farming is great. I am put off by balloon minion just because it is so spell reliant. Currently I'm using 1-2 spell per raid but gaining like 800-1.5k DE. Which isn't that bad. I figure right now even if i go higher the DE might be 3-4k DE per raid with balloon minions.
But then I'm using a core raiding build so not really BARCH since I never really master that game build yet.
But thank you. I seem to move up to crystal 2 and 1 when my AQ is available without her, raiding core at better build base takes too much spell and non-guarantee success.
Zapping is more of a trolling technique for me, haha.
