Anti-hog base design, impossible to 2/3 star!

I've been searching for a design that holds up against hog attacks since I was repeatedly getting smashed by them. I tried several bases that claimed to be anti-hogs but none of them prevented hog attacks from 2 starring me.

I decided to make my own TH9 hybrid anti-hog base. So far I've been attack 9 times; 5 lost, 4 were 1 stars and only 1 attack actually managed to do damage to my stores.

Why put your wiz towers in the middle? Their range isn´t large enough to damage the hogs jumping around destroying your outer layer of defences.

the real key to having an anti-hog base is to have a CC is that hard to lure troops out.

Because the idea behind this base is that the hogs move around the outside of the base and don't target the all important central defences. By having all four wizard towers in the middle it means that when the pack splits and some do go to the centre their is so much splash damage that they die too fast to take out the crossbows. Also the grouped up wizard towers acts as an added defence against air troops since the air defences aren't that close to the centre.

I agree that the CC being central would be ideal. But there are several advantage to having it in the position it is in. By having it close to one corner like that it encourages attackers to attack from that side. When the troops are lured they will have to drop a sufficient amount of archers/barbs/wizards etc to take out the troops which will mean they will undoubtedly launch their hog attack from the same corner to prevent towers killing off their damage dealing troops. This will result in the hogs heading around the base anti-clock wise and will lead them along the path of my carefully placed spring traps which usually take out 3 hogs at once. Additionally any troops that they dropped in that corner will be taken out by the bombs.

This is why the CC is where it is.

I don't use hogs a lot but doubt I would have any issue with that base. I think good hog users will 3 star it easily.

Also the wizard towers being out of range of the outside pack of hogs and the easily lured CC troops are both things that encourage hog attacks to take on my base. And they all fail which amuses me greatly considering how much dlix hog attacks cost :D

I have been using this base setup in the 2500 trophy range and there have been many attacks from what I would consider to be 'good hog users' and none of them have managed anything more than a 1 star. Look at the photos I posted, they show that attackers have used 5 maxed out spells and high level heros to no avail.

That doesn't prove anything. I successfully defend against L5 hogs 80% of the time too but I know my base is not a good anti hog base, in fact it's the perfect base for hog users to attack. 2500 is still full of terrible players, once you get higher that base will be 3 stared every attack.

Point is saying it is impossible to 2 or 3 star is a big call and in this case wrong.

If you want to test it you need to get to a range where it isn't full of useless players who rely on their inferno towers which is rampant in C1. Trouble is going much higher as a th9 is tough. Leaving your gold maxed and going to 2000 cups would probably even give a better sample than 2500.

Haha this is a terrible base against Hogs I could easily 3 star you, and 2500 is full Town hall 10 gemmers who have no clue what theyre doing, I won 9/10 Defences between 2500-2700 as a Mid level Town hall 9, what you consider good Hoggers must actually suck, because anyone with a Half a Brain could 3 star this base using Hogs pretty easily

Personally, I think that any truly 'anti-hog' base should have pairs of giant bombs placed between adjacent defenses. Having your bombs strewn around the outside of the base is a waste of giant bombs, IMHO. Put them far enough inside so that all the attacking hogs have had time to cluster up.

Watching 20+ hogs instantly disappear in a giant plume of smoke will NEVER get old.

Thanks for the advice Toblekai! I've edited it to add a giant bomb in between two of the outside defences. My only worry is that the gap could cause hogs to head to the centre rather than around the outside but hopefully the gap between wizard towers and the outside is still large enough to prevent this.

While I agree that the design of the base is decent, it is most certainly not an anti-hog base in the slightest. I'm not going to comment on the intelligence of those people attacking you, but I believe that any clasher with an ounce of battle strategy, 20+ hogs and three heal spells would 3 star this base every time. The simple fact being there is no actual trap which can get them caught with the double giant bomb. Also, the way your defenses are laid out does not mean that the hogs will circle the base. They are bunched well enough on a few sides where the hogs will very easily go into your core defense.

I also have to agree what others have said about your CC being on that corner. You can say it is for strategies sake, but there is no strategical advantage in my eyes about a CC that is so easy to draw out. You just saved your attacker that much time and effort to kill your CC troops.

Imo, any decent attacker with 2-3 heal spells, 20 hogs (L4 or L5), wiz or archers, heroes and some minions would three star this every time. Either way, good luck with it and have fun!

Pretty much everyone up until around 2800/2900 (Not literally everyone just the majority) are Town hall 10 gemmers that gemmed Inferno Towers and got up to Masters on Defence, at 2800/2900+ I am pretty sure anyone with Hogs or any other army will 3 Star this base every time

Get the hogs into the middle, easy 3 star

Not convinced this anywhere near the best Anti Hog base.

Your heroes are completely wasted and a very easy kill. The ability to lure out your CC is very easy with minimal troops.

Don't underestimate the fact that a lot of noob hoggers are pushing through Crystal as they think it's the easy way to do it.

Get into Masters II or higher and come back and tell us how awesome the base is.

Good luck with it, there are elements of a good hog base in there, however no way it's impossible to 2/3 star.

I have a similar principal in play with an anti-hog base I run. A smart hogger will attack in 2 waves, much like a balloon attack. The second wave will sport a rage spell and smash your base to pieces.



I am on saying it is a bad base, just that it has the same design flaw mine has. But most hoggers in Crystal aren't bright enough to realize this simple remedy

I think inferno tower should be unlocked at town hall 5 or 6 its not fair because its unlocked at 10 because it takes two long

No double giant bombs, lurable clancastle troops = an easy 3 star. No amount of defense for th9 would avoid that.

Only weak hogs player who spams their hogs would lose to this kind of base.

Inferno towers are powered by dark elixir, which is unlocked at town hall 7. Also, if you had ITs at th 6, you would be complaining that your troops are not strong enough to attack them, and you would ask for higher lab levels at lower th levels. Having inferno towers any earlier than th9 would cause a major unbalance in the game that would be irrevocable.

But using Crystal leagues, even low Masters isn't an ideal sample. The players are failing there because they are not skilled enough / or patient enough to make it into the the higher Masters; or even Champion leagues.

I'm not going to say yes to the idea even if you make it cost you your soul.

It would unbalance the game. PERMANENTLY. IRREVOCABLY. DEFINITIVELY.

Like I said most people up until about Master 2 are gemmers with no skill, in Masters 3 as a Medium level Town hall 9 I won 9/10 Defences, 7 of them were against noob hog spammers which would have lost to any base (4 didn't even lure cc or Heroes, got 35% or less, the other 3 of these my cc and heroes got lured before a noob hog spam was deployed and ended up getting around 45%) one night I won 3 Defences against noob hoggers, 2 of them with cc and heroes down aswell as most traps triggered, however one night I logged off and ended up getting 3 starred using hogs (using an anti hog with heroes and cc hard to lure, better trap placement and more solid design overall) with ease, this guy dropped 4 hogs on an archer tower to lure my cc wizards aswell as heroes before taking them out using a few wizards barbs and archers to take them out, followed by breaking the hog ring and sending his hogs in waves, he 3 starred me with over a minute left and stole 29 trophies, this was the only attack I lost the rest were attacks by premature th10 noobs with too much money and no skill, so winning against a few noob hog spams doesn't mean your base is the best against hog riders

In my one year experience of playing coc, there is no perfect base against any troops. Good against hogs doesn't mean it will be effective against other troop combo. No point arguing bout this coz there is no perfect base in coc. Its juz a matter of time when a pro hogger comes across ur base n 3 starred it. Juz my 2 cents worth.

im a self confessed hogger - 30 hogs lvl 5, 10 mins lvl 5 (soon 6) 10 barbs, 35 archers and 2 giants etc. 4 heal 1 lit spells
If a TH9 has lurable CC and heroes - like this one does (drop 1 giant to lure cc then few more archers then lit spell then more archer) AQ lure out then hit with 10 barbs, BK lure out then 5 mins... in go the hogs, 2-3 heals, Heroes and remaining troops clean up
I would defnitely take on this base if it was showing 250k+ gold, Heroes very easy to get and CC not too difficult.
I would attack at the corners where the air d is close to the wiz tower the hogs would likly split up a little but shouldnt be a problem....anyway thats my evaluation.
Could be wrong, but that configuration doesnt scare me - a centralized CC and awake AQ and BK in the middle and I will likely skip it, but not this base

OP: This certainly is a great base, but keep in mind that focusing too hard on hog defense may leave you susceptible to other strategies.

Since they're not near outside they won't get destroyed easily and also when all hogs get to the 4 wizard towerss then that's doom for hogs. This means this base will likely get 1 starred a lot but hardly 2-3 starred.

Your ADs are dangerously too central.

Experienced Hoggers will just break the outer ring by taking out an Archer Tower then use your ADs to go straight to the center.

I also agree with others about keeping the Wizards Towers in the middle is bad. They have terrible range, but deal big damage to Hogs, much better on the outside. If Hogs every breach the center then they will just drop a Heal spell and you'll lose all your WTs in 5 seconds.

Exactly 10 chars

I never attacked with hog raiders so if I would do it and stumble into this layout then I go from the bottom right by clearing cannon, mortar and the archer tower (no sure if needed), then do the same on the right and get that cannon and archer tower (again not sure if needed) and then all hog riders will attack the air defense and then go straight to the middle. Like Stitch said, one heal spell and middle is cleaned.

Can u share a screen shot of the base & defense logs? Say from today to 3 days ago? It shows when the attacks happened.

A good hog player will have no problem with this base. They will send in 3 hogs either side of one defence, creating a funnel to the middle.

The only thing that stops good hog players is an unlurable CC.

It may be holding up for you ok at the moment and I am pleased for you. A good player will still 3 star you though.

Wow, I never thought this thread would get so many replies! :eek: Thank you to everyone who has commented, negatively or positively, as I have learnt a lot from what people have had to say. I think I'll be using the forums more often after this as there is clearly much to be learnt from people here.

Despite all the criticism and negative comments towards my base not being good against hogs, I still feel you to be wrong. Just to reiterate why I made this base in the first place; I was fed up with hog attacks (even the noob ones) being able to easily 2/3 start my base. So I wanted a base which would prevent hog attacks from destroying most of my stores and costing me precious dlix and gold. I also wanted to use this base to push and reach masters, which is still a target which I am certain I will achieve. It was foolish of me to claim that the base I had designed was 'Impossible to 2/3 star by hogs' but the evidence I saw from attacks all indicated that that statement was true.

The strategic advantage I get from having my CC where it is is firstly to lure in the hog attackers. My base is specifically designed to defend against those kind of attacks, which is does extremely well, so it's important those are the people who are attacking me. Out of the 11 attacks I've had so far 10/11 of them have been hog attacks, so that aspect has been successful in luring them in. The CC being there, along with a mortar near that corner of the base, are both factors which have encouraged hog attackers to attack from that corner which they all have. Since this is always the case I place the majority of my traps in that corner which are successful in 1. killing any archers/barbs/wizards and taking off most of the the health from heroes 2. bouncing 6-9 hogs off the map with the position of spring traps. If the CC was not their then I would be able to accurately predict where the attacks would strike from and I would not be able to create such a effective layout of traps.

Yeah your right, I'd say its impossible to create a base thats perfect against every strategy. But the 2400-2600 trophy range seems to be rampant with hog attacks so I wanted to create a base specifically designed against those attacks. And because of my CC placement my base looks like an easy target for those hog attacks which ensures I'm almost always attacked by them giving me shield without loosing any resources and little trophies.

This is exactly why my base is working so well for me. The hogs do indeed get split up which weakens their damage output and, in addition to spring traps reducing the numbers of the packs, they move around the outside slower and slower and do not destroy all the defences. Also I want hog attacks me because of the ease of getting CC troops and heroes. But it still takes them about half of their damage dealing troops to take out my heroes and CC which means what little troops they have left are easily taken out by my bomb placement.

Your spot on, this is exactly what happens and I'll show this happening to an experienced hog attacker in some photos below. The fact that they cannot destroy the central defences means my dlix store and TH stays unscathed.

This does not happen. I'll give the evidence in some photos at the end of this post.

The strategy you speak of hasn't been tried on my base yet so you may well be right. However, even if you took out the AD with 3 hogs on each side I don't see how that attack could lead onto my central defences getting destroyed and resulting in a 3 star. If the AD were taken out the hogs would still target a whole row of the defences on one side before heading to the middle which would result in 4-6 of them getting flung out the picture by spring traps. Not to mention the fact that a few of the pack might be lured towards the centre prematurely and get smashed by wizard towers. This could result in the attacker panicking and dropping a healing spell on those few that have target the centre and they wouldn't survive the splash damage from the 4 wizard towers (which is something thats happened in attacks before). But lets say the pack stays together and the player waits until the main pack reaches the centre. Since they use 6-12 hogs taking out the AD in addition to the fact some of them would have been taken out by spring traps their numbers will not be enough to take out all of the central defences. The only situation where this attack could succeed is if the attacker was wise enough to save a healing and a rage spell for the centre. In that situation I can see how they could indeed destroy the middle defences and get a 2 maybe 3 star. This will probably happen when I get higher in the trophy count but until it happens I will continue to stand by the fact that this is a great base against hogs in the 2400-2600 trophy range.

So now that I've replied to peoples responses and strategies I'm going to post some links to photos showing the stages of an attack from what I would perceive to be a good hog strategist. This attacker was clever in the fact they did not drop all their hogs at once and kept a group back which could target the central defences when the other hogs had cleared some of the outside defences.


Like every hog attacker, they attacked from the bottom right corner luring out my CC troops and dropping a group of archers and a few wizards, but not all of them:

Then he drops all his hogs, bar 5, in the same corner. They target that all important cannon on the outside of my base which causes the pack to get spilt once its destroyed:

Then a giant bomb goes to town on the right pack (thanks again for that bit of advice Toblekai! :D). I have now added a giant bomb on the left side too so this will now happen to both packs:

Some of the hogs from the left pack then target the centre and the attacker drops a healing spell in the middle. But a spring trap takes out 3 of them and subsequently they do not have enough attacking power to take out any central defences before they die from splash damage. You can also see in this photo that the group in the bottom right get damaged by a bomb:

In this next photo you can see the giant bomb about to take out those remaining wizards and see how unscathed the central defences are with the hogs dead:

With most of his original wave of hogs dead or on red health he drops his remaining hogs who can now head straight to the centre. He drops his last healing spell with them in the hope that they will take out most of the central defences:

However, even level 5 hogs with a level 6 healing spell on them are no match for the splash damage from 4 wizard towers and they only manage to take out 2/6 out of those all important central defences:

So here are what defences were left once all the hogs were dead. He was smart in keeping some wizards until the end who were subsequently able to take out quite a few buildings. But even this smart strategy came nowhere near to a 3 start or even a 2 star:

Its worth taking into account that this player didn't use his heroes. But even if they had I still think I had enough central defences to prevent a 2 star.



As requested by Adamsaking, here are the last 3 attacks. That balloon attack was the first attack that wasn't hogs and annoyingly got to my dlix. But its impossible to create a base that can hold up against every type of attack strategy so I'm willing to loose the odd battle to air troops in return for being able to defend my dlix and TH against hog attacks. The top photo was the attack I discussed above:

So I stand by my opinion that this is a very effective base against hogs! But I'd love to hear your hog strategy and whether you think you can win against me and if so how.

Not saying it's bad...just has many elements that i look for when raiding with hogs. CC can be pulled, hero's are not centered (those are two most important elements in hog raiding). Also the positioning of the air defense provides a clear path to the critical defenses in the middle, all the wiz towers would have an effect, but I would heal. Also not that I would know this when raiding, but the positioning of the giant bombs would miss the hog formations. These things may have already been said, I didn't read everything. I'll post my design and recent results. Fell free to critique. You must be joking by saying this village is better than his...

It is much easier to get to your core than in his layout (just look at the distance the corner defenses are from the core ones) your heroes can be easily lured with 2 barbs, your cc troops can be easily lured with 2 hogs from attacking the AD bottom right, and I have no idea why are there mortars in the middle since they will miss nearly every shot

Seems to work pretty well. Changes were made after that cheap 50% at the bottom. 2 for 2 since...We'll see though, Ima keep pushin:)

The mortars are not integral defences for taking out hogs. They fire too slowly. And the wizard towers are all in the middle so that any hogs that do make it to the centre get smashed by so much splash damage, even if they have a healing spell on them. The grouped up wizard towers also act as a deterrence for giant/wizard attacks and act as an added air defence against balloons/minions.

And yeah, a couple of inferno towers would help a lot!

I don't like the placement of your traps, and you need to post replays. I bet you once you reach crystal + you will be getting battered because of this, they don't know how to attack with hogs! Put your teslas outside...

The most hogs that have ever made it to the centre were 5. They were level 5 and the healing spell which was dropped on them was level 6. They managed to take out a crossbow and 1 wizard tower before they were all simultaneously killed by splash damage. I posted photos of that happening if you read my post on the previous page.

Haha, I explained in detail why this base is effective against hog attacks in my post on page 5. I also linked photos to show an attack where the attacker dropped their hogs in 2 waves and that only got a 1 star too.

I'm not wrong, any base where Heroes and Clan castle are easily lured is automatically no good against Hogs, you back this up by saying its placed where it can be lured for "strategic reasons" which makes absolutely no sense, placing your Clan castle where it is easily lured is in no way Strategic at all, especially with a base which you claim to be "Anti-Hog", a Centralised Clan Castle is one of the most Important components (along with Centralised Heroes which your base also lacks), Trap placement and well placed Hog ring is also two key components, both of which your base lacks with bad trap placement and an easily broken Hog ring which is Inconsistent due to the Air Defence in your buffer layer (Hogs might target Air Defence and move into your core), sure this is enough to win against noob hoggers but if a half-decent Hog user comes across your base they shouldn't have trouble 3 starring you

Well the acid test is to move your base over Crystal 3 and see how it holds up. That's where the good hoggers operate and put enough DE 'on show' to give them a DE profit and make it worth there while. The points Slayer makes are well made and from my experience in trying to find a good anti-hog base very accurate. You do have some original ideas though and if your base holds up there I think you might be onto something.

I did what you have done and left my anti-hog base under crystal 3 and I never experienced a loss. I got 2 starred about 3 times in the same day and redesigned twice after moving over Crystal 3. Give it a go unless you're content to stay in the gold zone then it's probably going to give you the results you want.

Could you perhaps upload successive logs? Instead of just selected replays? Just want to see the consistency and legitimacy.

Following Slayers post and to summarise.

1) CC has to be in the middle to be an anti-hog base. Fact.
2) Advisable to have heroes in the middle but can be done without, just means a weaker base. Fact.
3) Hogs must follow outer defences all the way around and not breach core, which would not be the case for your design, due to your AD being in poor position. The hogs would split and jump into your core. Fact.
4) Double giant bombs are vital, they can kill a mass group of hogs in 1 go. Unless you have fixed this since your first post, this is also vital. Fact. Spring traps and normal bomb placement is also an integral part of any anti-hog base, which your base also lacks. Fact. Group bombs and make sure spring traps are placed where hogs will go.

Hope this clears up why your base is not a anti-hog base, no offence intended.

This base is severely lacking in good trap placement witch is essential to a strong anti-hog. Whilst this base has a decent hog ring, the giant bombs aren't utilized whatsoever. I believe the most effect defense against hoggies is the giant bomb; a double placement of them can completely wipe 40 hogs off the map.The CC placement isn't great as others have said and the heros lurable. I think that this base could "withstand" some of the hog beating in the higher trophy range you could do much better with a base like that of: Ringus or The Black Hole. This base is by no means impossible to 2/3 star, no base is.

What I've learned from the base designers on the forum, is that once you make your layout very good versus a specific strategy, it losses a lot of protection against other strategies. For example, lets say that it is a very good anti-hog layout (even though It looks pretty much the same as all the other ones), but in the trophy ranges you claim you're winning defenses, you'll get attacked by balloonions, especially with exposed ADs. Once all of the ADs fall (3 balloons for each one) and the loonions reach the core, drop one heal spell and most of your WTs will fall. So making a good defense base, isn't just making it strong against the strategy that's popular at the time, but making something that's versatile and efficient. Don't let the critcism stop you, keep designing, maybe just dial your ego down a bit, it isn't helpful at all.

The strategy you speak of hasn't been tried on my base yet so you may well be right. However, even if you took out the AD with 3 hogs on each side I don't see how that attack could lead onto my central defences getting destroyed and resulting in a 3 star. If the AD were taken out the hogs would still target a whole row of the defences on one side before heading to the middle which would result in 4-6 of them getting flung out the picture by spring traps. Not to mention the fact that a few of the pack might be lured towards the centre prematurely and get smashed by wizard towers. This could result in the attacker panicking and dropping a healing spell on those few that have target the centre and they wouldn't survive the splash damage from the 4 wizard towers (which is something thats happened in attacks before). But lets say the pack stays together and the player waits until the main pack reaches the centre. Since they use 6-12 hogs taking out the AD in addition to the fact some of them would have been taken out by spring traps their numbers will not be enough to take out all of the central defences. The only situation where this attack could succeed is if the attacker was wise enough to save a healing and a rage spell for the centre. In that situation I can see how they could indeed destroy the middle defences and get a 2 maybe 3 star. This will probably happen when I get higher in the trophy count but until it happens I will continue to stand by the fact that this is a great base against hogs in the 2400-2600 trophy range.

Fair play for responding to everyone. It looks and sounds like you are very happy with your set up and that is good. Its a game afterall and it is bringing you enjoyment and success that is great.

I think what a few of us were getting at is that the title isn't quite accurate as it is possible no matter how good your layout and design, to 3 star any TH9 Base with Hogs. Unfortunately the lack of Inferno's and inability to get lvl4 Giant Bombs mean that there is no base that can cope with a good player.
