Which mining material has given you the most diamonds?
I don't think I've gotten diamonds from anything other than a shovel.
I've had diamonds from TNT as well, but mostly from the shovel :)
I've had diamonds from all three items! I was surprised when I got one from a dynamite. Didn't think those would ever give diamonds.
But it seems like its just random for me. I've never really paid attention to what gives me diamonds. I'm just happy and excited to see the diamond pop out of the mine lol
I used dynamite and got 2 diamonds just this week, so I don't think it makes a difference. I used all my dynamite, TNT and a few shovels this week and mined 23 diamonds in total. It was great! 5 one after the other. I kept mining until the last one didn't produce anything other than ore. Gotta love that!
I don't think it makes a difference which tool you use, I've gotten diamonds from all three.
I've got diamonds from all three but the winner by a large margin is the shovel
I don't think it matters. (That should be an option in the poll!)
Shovels give you the most ore, but you have an equal chance of getting a diamond whether you use a shovel, TNT, or dynamite.
Shovel for me too. I don't pay much attention to what is mined.
If you folks don't think it works that way, you are welcome to test your hypothesis with a count and post the results on this thread. What I did was send Tom to get me 100 shovels, and counted how many diamonds I got back from that. From 100 shovels I got 400 ores and 13 diamonds, which is 1 diamond for 30 ores--not strictly linked, of course, there is some randomness, but counting over a long series reveals the average.

Unfortunately, I doubt anyone will want to send Tom for 100 dynamite instead of shovels. Because of the ore. You definitely get more ore from shovels. Even if you don't use it, you can sell it or trade it, so getting dynamite instead would kinda suck.
Though maybe I'll try it anyway, out of sheer curiosity.
If your theory is correct, using dynamite instead of shovels should result in half as many diamonds - 6 or 7, not 13. If Holidae's observation is correct, 100 dynamite will yield about 13 diamonds.
On further review...I think LoganRae is correct. There's a lot of random variation, and 100 shovels is probably not enough to eliminate it. For example, I used 100 shovels tonight, and got 27 diamonds. Someone posted in the "use Tom to mine diamonds" thread that he got 32 diamonds for 100 shovels. The standard deviation appears to be pretty high.
FWIW, Holidae said he used 20 each of dynamite, TNT, and shovels, and got roughly the same number of diamonds from each. But that's a really small sample size.
Yup pretty much what he said. The game seems to have a predetermined sequences of ores and diamond rewards. Much like a series of numbers. And as such shovels(giving you 4) would give you the most as it moves you down the series the fastest.
now i have tested it by using the same number of tools (eg. 10 shovels) and recorded what the rewards were... Without having actually used the tools. (Found through old mine trick thread)
And needless to say, the same number of each type of ores were received and the same number of diamonds over multiple trials (10+).
now i'd say it will be very difficult to tell how long this series of rewards are since it is not as easy to record indefinitely, let alone try to find a repeating pattern as you aggregate more and more data.
In another thread, someone said the mine has streaks. Bad ones and good ones. He keeps a stash of shovels, for when the mine is on a hot streak. He'll use shovels until the streak ends, then stop and save the rest for the next streak.
I had noticed the mine has streaks, but it never occurred to me to stop mining when I hit a bad streak and mine more when I hit a good one. I had assumed that the sequence as predetermined, like you say. But maybe it's not. Maybe it's more random than that.
FWIW, I think Powdermonkey was really unlucky, getting only 13 diamonds from 100 shovels. I expect to get at least 1 diamond per 5 shovels, and usually get more. Sometimes a lot more. This matches Holidae's findings: over 400+ shovels, he averaged one diamond per 4.4 shovels. That's almost 23 diamonds per 100 shovels.
Right. Farm action related rewards are indeed random (harvesting, collecting items, feeding pets) but when you do the same test with the mine, you get the same result each time. (Same number of silver, gold, plat)
the only variation i did notice was the ratio of silver/gold/plat for the same number of ores seemed to differ depending on the tool. However if the same tool was tested, duplicate results each time.
eg. 4 tnt and 3 shovels. Both gives 12 ores but gave different ratio of silver/gold/plat
so perhaps each tool type has its own series... Who knows... I stopped testing after realizing the old mine trick didnt work and just settled for diamonds here and there from the mine.
So the gifts pets give you are totally random?
I've been wondering about that. I know more expensive pets give you more XP, but what about the expansion items, saws, etc., they give you? Are the item drops per XP, or per instance?
Will a cheap tabby cat give me as many planks, nails, etc. as an expensive tuxedo kitty?
As for the mine...I might have to save up 100 dynamite and see how many diamonds that gives me. Though given the large standard deviation, 100 might not be enough to reveal anything significant.
What I'm saying is when you play the game with not so stable connection (weak 3G signal), you may wake a cat and get bolt from it. But the game lost connection and reconnect. You see your cat is still sleeping and wake it again, but get plank this time. That's what I refer to as "random", not the odd "how many times". You can check the link in my signature for the latter, I did a little experience on pet a while ago. Seems to be every 3 horses and every 4th cats/dogs/donkey.

As for the dynamite...I think I've thought of a possible solution. It doesn't have to be 100 dynamite at once. I'll just keep track of what I get when I use a dynamite, until I have 100 samples. That way I don't have to send Tom for 100 dynamite when he could be getting me shovels, diamond rings, or platinum bars. And I don't have to waste precious barn space storing all that dynamite, as I would if I wanted to use 100 all at one go.
It might even be better this way. It will be a random sampling, which might help eliminate the hot streak/cold streak problem.
I rarely leave ore piled up in front of my mine, because I like to see how many diamonds I got so I can budget diamond usage. (Once Tom is paid for for another 10 days, I'll spend surplus diamonds on things like expansion slots, mystery nets, occasionally an extra spin on the wheel of fortune.) So this should work. And of course, if anyone else wants to keep track too, that would be great. The more data points the better.
