At what point are the barn and silo 'large enough'?

Hi all,

I've been playing for a while now, level 46. I keep struggling with the barn size. Silo isn't really an issue, i just keep it filled up.
My silo is 825 and my barn is 800. I'm a bit of a hoarder, i try to keep 5 to 8 items of every item in stock, to be able to do the next boat quickly, but my barn is always short of space. I keep selling 10 wool/bacon/eggs just to be able to feed my hungry animals.
At what point does that become less of a hassle, if ever? I try to upgrade as fast as i can, but the barn items are pretty hard to find in the market (especially planks for me).

Mine are at 1500 each now, and I'm still cramped. For awhile silo space wasn't a problem, but now I'm running into the limit more, probably because there are new crops to store.

There are people who have much larger barns than mine, who still say they never have enough space.

Part of the problem is that you need so many expansion items as barn size increases. It's about 50 of each item for the next expansion for me; for both barn and silo, that means about 300 slots taken up for expansion items.

Probably most of it is that stuff expands to fill the space available for it. ;)

Although to answer your question properly, I guess around the 1200'mark it started to feel easier for me. I could hold onto more items, and was able to do more of my own boats without using Tom, and still able to help others' boats.

That was probably around the point where you had every machine and could calculate the number of items you can store?

Same goes for silo. Haven't had a new product in ages so i know how much i can store.

I was thinking about this the other day actually. There must be a point at which it's better to just stop, sell off all expansion materials and make the most of the extra space. I'm only at 450 so I'm certainly not at that point yet...

It's always somewhere around 10% of your total barn space so that should not be an issue. You need 54 items for the 500 upgrade, 114 for the 1000 update, 144 for the 1500 update, etc etc.

At the risk of revealing myself to be a total nerd...before I found this forum (and that handy chart), I did one myself, and included the percentage of storage space taken up by the required items.

I didn't realize at the time that after 1000, it goes up by 50 instead of 25. Having passed 1000 now, and adjusting my spreadsheet, it turns out that the number of required expansion items as a percentage of total storage increases slightly until 1000, then starts decreasing.

So I'd say it's worth it to keep expanding, at least if you plan to go past 1000.

The worst is 875 to 1000: the required expansion items take up 11.7% of your space.

By the end (to 10,000), the required expansion items take up only 6.6% of your space. So it does get easier, once you get past 1000.

I might be a nerd too, i did all these calculations to confirm/bust my 'it gets harder when you need more' paranoia.

Storage space is always painful. i'm at 2,000 each, and still feeling it.

Barn is much tougher than silo, I constantly keep a silent count of each item. Silo I'm sometimes not even counting at this point.

If they add new machines with this update, it will get tough again.

Nice chart. 1000 is a pretty sharp inflection point there. Going up by 50 instead of 25 each expansion really helps.

No matter how large they are, you always manage to fill them both. You just keep more of more items/goods in stock.. I said I would stop at 2,000 each, but nah, still going.. Aiming for 3,000 each now..??

My answer to op is "never". Every time I start getting a little comfortable with the size of my barn, we have an update, more things are added to the game, and there I am with inadequate space again. No accident, I am sure. If you don't fill boat orders, then the need for barn space diminishes substantially.

I don't know....I'm level 80 and my barn/silo are at 875 each; they were at 850 for the last few months and I only just upgraded them again last week. I run into the limit sometimes, like right now when I have a popcorn and wheat boat order but it never is a problem for very long.

eta: I fill boat orders for others all the time, that's generally what I go through the DD for.

I have been playing for almost a month now. I'm level 41 and 450 space and i found it depends how you play. If you want to help friends and other boats and instantly fill your own truck orders you need lots of space.

If however you want to make lots of coin then your barn/silo will never be filled cause you sell the stuff as fast as you make it on the RSS.

I just got my barn to 1,000 (hooray!), and it feels okay until I get close to increasing it again - because of the BEMs piling up. I don't expand my silo regularly, though. I can't remember where it is, but I'd guess around 675, and it feels fine to me. I probably expand the barn 3-4 times before I expand the silo.

Once I finished expanding my land and fishing areas, I found I had a lot more wiggle room with my barn.

I'm at 625 for my silo and 525 for my barn. I stopped upgrading for a while, so it slowed me down. I don't know when they're large enough, but I'm assuming by the responses in this thread, I need at least 1000 for each.

When are they large enough........I'll let you know when I get there. Lol

I'm only at 775 and I find it manageable. More is always better, but up until 700 or so I struggled. Now I rarely have serious space issues and always have a bunch of stuff like plain popcorn that I can sell if desperate.

I feel like I'm never going to have enough space for my barn, no matter how many times I upgrade it. Right now my barn is 1850 and silo is 1950.
I usually struggle with barn space because my expansion materials for the silo and barn are allways "equal". So if I can upgrade my silo I can also upgrade my barn the same day... That leavs me with alot of space, but after a few days I run out of space again...
I'm close to upgrading now, and I have no space... This is what usually happens when I'm out of space:


*Milk is ready to collect.* I need to pick up cow feed first. *Picks up some of the cow feed. The barn is full!* Argh... need to sell something. *Sells 10 popcorn. Picks up the rest of the cow feed. Collects 4 milk. The barn is full! Looking for something to sell.* I have nothing to sell... 1850 things, but nothing to sell... *Feeds the 4 cows, collects 3 milk and one nail. The barn is full!* Stupid nail! Why can't you be a tape or a screw? *Feeds the 3 cows, collects 3 milk, and so on until all the milk have been collected and all the cows have been fed.* Had to do it the annoing way once again. 2 minutes later: *Wool is ready to collect.* ...


Can't wait until tomorrow, will probably be able to upgrade the barn and the silo! :o

Um, that again ;) Yesterday, I upgraded both my silo and the barn which freed about 400 spaces or so. Today it is full again. It amazes me, I'm selling so much, good stuff too, not a hoarder (not even doing own boats, only other's), yet it is full again, lol

Lol. I've been there too many times. Very recognizable.

I think the barn will never be big enough.
I must say having a barn of about 1800-2000 make playing easier. Having a larger barn than that, only the amounts of product you store increases.
A silo of 2000 is also sufficient I think.
(I am beyond these, so I almost never get a barn/silo full message)
