The point of defences?

So hear me out...yesterday I got a th3 to gold league just from sniping townhalls. Not much of an acheivement nowadays but I started looking at everyone else in my league and I just asked myself..whats the difference between my base and their base?

Apart from the defences I am still running veyr similar army comps and if I wanted I could just level up troops to have identical army comps which got me to gold.

So I ask..what is the point of spending weeks and weeks on defences when in the end it becomes meaningless? In this game the offensive side is MUCH more favored. Just look at the last update, mainly offensive updates. Especially in Gold and above you certainly wont win a lot of defenses. This is because the offense is just too strong in this game but thats not my complaint.

Sure it may be for aesthetics but other than that I see no point in even upgrading the first cannon you get from the tutorial. Because eventually you will lose a defense no matter how maxed your defense is.

I disagree. I get attacked by many people who want to 3-star me (especially in revenges) and leave with not much more than the townhall I purposely left for them in the corner.

That is the difference. Resource preservation.

I am a farmer, I have a lot of resources on me the majority of the time.

I want those resources to stay in my possession, not in the pockets of my attackers.

How do I achieve this? By upgrading my defenses and maxing my base before upgrading my town hall, also by staying in a reasonable trophy range that allows me to get good loot from premie defenses and abandoned bases, while defending against those who think they can take what I earned.

Obviously a TH3 in gold league will get steamrolled for 100% basically every time they get attacked. That's why a TH3 has no business being in gold league other than to say "look how high I made it by sniping THs". Like you said, it's not much of an achievement.

Ok, I understand the point of view from a farmer which is protecting resources. But realistically you are losing max 20% of what you have. On top of that you get a shield and in that shield time your pumps and mines will have made up for that loss. Or you could just mass raid and make much more than you had before.

Ninja Edit: Sorry if this looks like arguing to anyone its really not. I just really want to understand the neccessity to defenses when this game's offense, with the right comp, can steamroll any base.

Nah it's cool, I don't see it as arguing either, it's a reasonable debate :)

Your point is valid in that you can easily make back and earn even more than what anyone can take from you, that's totally fine.

But you know what's even better than that? Not losing any of your hard earned resources in the first place, which can actually hurt more if they're stealing large amounts of DE.

It's also very satisfying to see people struggle and fail to take you for resources or for trophies, depending on what you're trying to protect.

Defensive wins are satisfying.

There are people who play this game just to be a raiding monster and don't care to defend their base. There are people who get a thrill out of waiting for their next attack on their base so that their traps, hidden teslas, and CC troop make quick work out of a poorly executed attack (I love these haha).

Me personally, I like both. A powerful army to attack with, and a vault of a base to defend. In most cases I could care less what people take from me, it's more satisfying to watch a reply of someone TRYING to take my base and failing, because like you said, one good raid and it'll make up for a 3-star loss anyway :)

If an attacker has the right troop combo and correct deployment for your base, then yeah, defense might not matter. But more often than not, the first attacker doesn't have both, so you don't get steam rolled. I got two defensive wins (and shields) from hogs while all 3 mortars were upgrading - perfect examples of wrong troop combo and/or poor deployment.

I don't want to put the whammy on myself, so I'll just say my TH9 farming base far exceeded my expectations for protecting Gold/DE at Gold I/II. (Other than level 1 x-bows, the rest of the defenses were at or below TH8 levels). It was hogged and ballooned (no mass dragons though). Currently in Crystal II to see how it holds up there.

The point of defenses is not to be crushed. Upgrading defenses does make a difference between a good defense and a 3 star defense.

A Town hall 3 made it to Masters by sniping, I managed to get to Crystal by sniping with a Town hall 3, stop bragging

For Farmers: Farmers want to protect resources. TH10 can lose a maximum of 400k (I can't remember what the max for de is). Would you rather lose 400K, or something far less as a TH10 farmer? Without defenses, you lose the max every time.

Trophy hunters: Trophy hunters want to protect trophies. Without defenses you will be 3* every time. You can lose up to 59 or 60 trophies maximum, I believe. Some people have gone to champ without maxing defenses, but that requires an intense amount of playtime, since you will be 3* when you log out.

Without defenses, you will lose the ability to minimize either trophy, or resource loses.

The purpose of upgrading/having defenses is the same as the purpose for having everything else in this game, to have fun. Play it how you want to, if you choose to trophy hunt and not worry about anything else, go for it! Enjoy the game your way just as everybody else does. I personally want to max everything, why? For the simple enjoyment of seeing my efforts be put into every upgrade I do. I don't care to be the top player, and obviously neither do you if you are questioning the usefulness of defenses :rolleyes:

Thanks for the insight. I like the idea of playing the game as YOU want to play it (provided you dont break the rules). Thats what makes you unique and stand out. :D

Well the main reason to upgrade your defense is so everyone else can have something to attack. Can you imagine if no1 upgraded their defense? The game would be dead in one week!!!! Plus, it is a lot of fun when you see some1 fail on your defense.
