As to where, i have not a clue... Im trying to find a spot for myself atm as well... Ill let you know if i find anything... Currently sitting at 1300 and there are a good number of a couple hundred de per base and they are WEAK bases lol... But really nothing below that...
I have heard that one great spot for de is Crystal 2-Master3.
Without a doubt barch is the best. But overnight try some ballonians to mix it up;)
I would try barching in masters. Like others said, it's great. I, as a town hall 8, earned ~5,000 in 2-3 hours with bam. By 5K, I mean I had 5K more than when I started. I stole around 5,500 but I used minions.
Best range for me has been around 2300 to 2400. I have never been good with Barch by itself, so I add 12 giants and a rage spell to get into the core of tougher bases. Others may be better with it than I am, I can never get to de storage deep in the core of bases with barb/ arch. As far as Masters, it is better and easier to get de, but too hard maintain trophies, for me at least.
I feel nervous giving my strategy to a big and well known clasher, just intimidating. Anyways, what I do is zap the DE storages with 2k-ish and use all archers to go for the full drills. Also maybe try to 50% them, i normally just hit the drills, storage, and leave. Then I TH snipe back up again and do it once more. I have heard of better strategies tho, and gold 2/3 is terrible, lots of skips.ive heard of crystal 2/3 being better. Hope it works and/or you find a good strategy and good luck!

Farming my way down
I'm raiding in the 2600-2700 range and getting at least 2k per raid. I have raids where I see 4-6k. Those raids I go after just the resources win or lose. I use mini ball 20-24 loons 40-50 minis, cc drag + minis. 3rage 1 zap. I go about 60% of raids without spells but if I have to use them I will.
I would say to be in crystal 2 and use a some form or balloon ion and if you have trouble with discos, use a dragloonion
Unity Sharp has a great guide on dark and gold farming it is his guide to maxing th9 the fastest without gems
I would recommend checking that out it has helped me out
