I been trying to decide when to go from TH5 to TH6 it takes 4 days and I don't want to get everything upgraded then do my TH and spend the next 4 days twiddling my thumbs waiting for it to finish. But I also don't want to start getting slammed by the higher lvls and find out all the places I try to raid are to hard. Also right now when I'm nexting looking for a base to raid I constantly find bases way to low to bother with.
You should be ok going from 5 to 6
Try to time your last defense upgrades to finish the same time as you town hall. Also, any down time waiting for it to finish is when you fill your storages, so you will have loot to spend when the TH upgrade finishes.
Max your townhall from 7 (prefer 6) onward. Lower townhall isn't important. You need that 4th camp.
Not too bad at lower th lvls but I'd say th7 and up you want to try to max
