I think that the shield, like you said, isn't necessary. In any case you just started so that's ok. If you want to consistently get a shield so that you can save up your collector resources, throw that town hall outside and let people take it for free. You will get like an 11 hour shield or something. Plus, the only reason you are protecting your town hall in the center of your base is so that it doesn't get attacked and you lose trophies. But seeing as you have zero I would say that it doesn't matter.
Like the guy above said, get out there and attack.
Thanks for your replies, one reason I haven't attacked is not to end the shield prematurely. I want to collect and upgrade for the next 4 days. Or is that a bad strategy and I would benefit more from attacking?
Keep upgrading mate! Like someone said earlier. Try and get your walls done early.
Well now you have it, keep it for a few days, because than you just throw your gems away.
But the best is attack, when you reach high thropys and the enemy is getting to hard to defeat, just drop a few thropys and start hunting

Should I level town hall to 5 or stay at 4 for another few weeks?
There isn't really much you can do at th4, but that base doesn't look bad ;)
you could put your town hall outside and you mortar in the centre.
and never buy shields ;). You might as well break it and go attack people. ;)
and stay th4 for i little longer ;)
Boy your 5th builder, it will help you more then boosting pumps and buying shields. Builders are the MOST important thing to get with gems. You do not need to fear attacks, shields are unnessisary, people can only steal up to a cap. You need to farm with barbarians and archers. Max your walls and defences and go for TH 5. if you are active and like to attack, maxing pumps is not needed.
How long should I wait to advance level 5?
I did put my town hall outside in a corner and mortar in the center. Also I have only upgraded barb and archers to level 2, is that enough to raid at my level?
