The gift cards are very confusing to begin with. Basically, if you fill a crate on someone's boat, or if you water a plant for them, when they see your picture against it they can tap a little envelope icon to send you a thank you letter.
Some of those thank you letters will contain a gift card, and they all come in the post once a day - you access them by tapping the blue mailbox next to the one with the newspaper in it.
When you open that mailbox it shows you a catalogue, and these are the mystery packages that you can order, based on the number of gift vouchers you have.
So in short, the more stuff you do at other people's farms, the more gift cards you get. And that in turn gives you more chances to be horribly disappointed at the 2 saws you just got for 35 gift cards - lol... Or you might get some diamonds, or some coins, or even the legendary Big Red Tractor. ;) It's all a gamble.

this is great help.
Happy farming. :-)
How many friends have you got? If you tap the little icon with 3 people on it, that will list your friends. Visit their farm by tapping their picture.
Friends who need help will have an exclamation icon on their picture. You can choose to just see people who need help by selecting the tab with the exclamation mark on it. There may be times when none of your friends need help, and if you don't have many yet than that might be the case most of the time. For example I've got nearly 100 Gamecenter friends, and only one of them needs help at the moment. Unfortunately it's a boat crate that wants maple syrup and I don't have enough to help.
You can find more people to help by looking in the newspaper - again look for that exclamation mark.
