Supercell's goal is for players to buy gems, so they need to incentivise the players that do buy them, which isn't me. So the fact that I don't get anything back in terms of gems other than the few trees a day doesn't bother me.
How do they incentivise the top gemmers? well giving a few k in gems to the top 10 guys in the top 3 clans seems a pretty good way to incentivise the top spenders. Those guys are likely to be the top spenders after all.
I recently saw a forum post about some charity funding? how many gems were donated for the tournament by supercell team? 500 :D
Edit : it's 5000 gems. i have been corrected twice :P so i thought i will mention here.
5000 ! that's something for a company like Supercell :D
let's ignore prizes, How about some tournaments to just brag about winning them? something like hitting the hall of fame for a day per league range?
There's no reasonsble argument that a player can make when it comes to things like more reward, more giveaways, gems discounts, etc.
You know what these ideas have in common? It is all from a player's point of view without considering the effect it has on Supercell's revenue.
At the end of the day we all like to be rewarded with a million gems everyday for logging on. Goes to show that even though an idea is supported by 100% of players, it can still be a bad idea.
The OP can speculate all he want about how giving away free stuff will help SC attract more players and thus increase revenue, but until he shows convincing credentials or sufficient market research data, i'm gonna take it as a pinch of salt.
And don't get me started on the ever popular consumer logic that the service provider is making "too much" money and they "should" give back some.
I completely agree; I can't see their numbers, so for all I know they could make less from doing this. We can all be honest here, though, a few 1 gem boosts a year to give back to the community is pretty cheap. I just want people to get this SC being their buddy buddy, out of said players heads. They really do not have to go out of their way to add in some minor competitions.
Edit: That agreement was towards Sandal.
As much as the idea sounds fine you first need to look at a number of things. I imagine supercell has a large amount of money being spend on servers and staff etc so 1 mil a day is not a true amount. I would like to see what ideas you have for tournaments. Any type of tournament is most likely going to be dominated by the top players anyway, and tournaments within leagues probably wouldn't work.
Easy example of how a tournament can work, assuming SuperCell has all of the correct information.
SC pairs 50 people who started no later than november who have an average weekly log on time of 15 hours (could be chosen on a last monthly stat), these 50 players given similar chances, have several leaderboards for th destroyed, cup range, gold looted etc. With the top x in each category winning a prize.
It's not possible for CoC to be a true competitive game.
1. Skill is saturated by time, ranks, and upgrades. It takes too long to be completely even with your opponent. Good competitive games give you everything from the get go so that there are no advantages save for lag. The 2 best modern versions I can think of would be Halo (Halo 3 or lower) or Counter Strike.
2. This game relies heavily on outnumbering your opponent. Tactics are almost non existent during attacks. All it is is outnumbering the opponent and placing troops in the right place/time.
